What are the pro's and con's of net pen rearing salmon for future stocks?? It was sucessful with pink salmon in campbell and it has been done in goose bay for chinook.. Why cant we do it more widespread to enhance our stocks?? Are there negative effects??

It would take pages to get you up to speed on the pros and cons of marine net pen rearing. In a nut shell, yes it is practical if done for a short period of time. Locations are critical too. Labour has to be considered too as well as costs. Vibrio as well as lice can be problematic.

Normally it is done to give an early boost to the fish before they are released and can also be used to provide a homing location for the returning fish for harvest.

DFO and volunteer groups have used this technology as have Wa. Or and Ak.

That is what Alaska does. They raise millions of fish in pens, feed them pellets, pump them with antibiotics then release them. Except up there they are called wild salmon...
