looking to purchase a 96 yamaha 8 horse 2 stroke it does not have a charging system on it. My question is it possible to put a charging system on this type of outboard or should I continue my search for one that has it already

I am you can ad it. Yes lots of the older 2 strokes trolling motors did not come with them. Call a Yamaha Dealer for part #'s then look online.

It is a rectifier not a altenator.

Yamaha is probably the cheapest O/B to add a charging system to. Some years back I wanted to add a charging system to my 20 HP Yamaha. Went to the dealer and he told me that all the wiring was there already. Bought the rectifier for $86.00, hooked up a couple of wires and I was good to go. My Evinrude at that time would have cost me $250.00 and when I checked recently about doing my small Merc I was quoted $600+ by my dealer.

me thinks you need a new dealer

I don't think so.When we ran the serial # we found that my Merc requires a flywheel with the magnets on it in addition to a pile of other expensive parts. That flywheel alone is worth some serious dollars. Fortunately I find that I don't need a charging system to keep my Aux battery charged. The big motor keeps it well charged after a day of pulling the downriggers up and down.
