I was just listening to the weather and they announced a native fishery on the Fraser with drift nets and into Georgia Strait? Whats going on? Do they want to kill off every friggen fish out there?

DFO imposes a slot restriction on south vanc island to protect early
Fraser Chinook, and then they allow nets in the river ???
Talk about shooting yourself in the foot.

I don't get it
:(

WTF,, What don't these idiots in fisheries get. THat should be the very last type of fishing allowed on the fraser. WHats next shopping cart dams????

No, shopping carts aren't next. The Capilano river has seen shopping cart dams for years.

Oh i know the cap well and the mess they made of that.Thats the reason for the statement. I am sure that a full rivernet from shore to shore would be just perfect

Good luck,,thats not POLITICALLY CORRECT!!!
Sturgeon fishing will be excellent again this year as well as tubing and wakeboarding...Salmon fishing in the Fraser???? I'm not holding my breath...I'm dealing with politicians too much,,they just don't have the will to make changes for the stocks, they are more concerned with votes not longterm viability of the resource..
Frustration doesn't even begin to describe what most sportfishers are feeling..
All the suggestions in the world amount to jack crap if at the end of the day the decision makers are not prepared to bite the bullet and make unpopular all encompassing closures with no special exclusions..
Them's the facts we live with, until we get some politicians with a set of gonads to go with a few brain cells nothing will change too much...
Natives have rights to fish but they DO NOT </u> have the right to add to the problem when stocks are dangerously low. Thats called greed, not historical rights to food and ceremonial fish retention.
It seems to be a never ending circle of finger pointing with little constructive responses to actually increase stock levels..

has anybody asked the aboriginal community if they care enough to preserve the salmon for THEIR future generations?I had an interesting discussion with one who brazenly admitted to fishing to the limit of their aboriginal agreement, only to take the catch to a freighter offshore.I have also seen a friend's pictures of piles of sockeye the size of VW bugs left to rot because the buyer reneged on the deal.
I have seen enough to know that the status community cannot be left to continue their practices without irrecoverable consequences.
DFO`s acceptable return numbers are far too low. What were they 50,30 or even twenty years ago?

Just wondering who's in charge of making these decisions?
DFO is fairly large organization.
Who's knuckle headed enough to come up with such nonesense. Is there, perhaps some common sense behind these decisions?
cheers

The main problem, (aside from the Natives themselves) is that DFO, the RCMP, and the politicians of all stripes are afraid to kick over this applecart. Last time they tried, the RCMP had to escort the DFO guys off of a reservation before they got killed.

Fisheries officers are routinely shot at in the Fraser Canyon during "fishing" (poaching?) season.

Talk about organized crime...

A Liberal Fisheries Minister a few years back tipped off the suspect involved in a large sale of Salmon that was about to be busted by DFO at the Delta Town and Country Inn by the Deas tunnel. The cops were in the parking lot with the buy money and were called off at the last minute. I know one of the guys involved personally, so I know this one is true. It is just one of many reasons why I will never ever vote Liberal again.

The feds are using our Salmon to buy peace with the natives in this country. Sad but true.
