Nanaimo MP supports call for inquiry into salmon collapse

The federal government is responding to calls for a full independent judicial inquiry into the collapse of the sockeye salmon stocks in the Fraser River last year, says Nanaimo-Alberni MP James Lunney.

He said B.C. Supreme Court Justice Bruce Cohen was appointed by the Conservative government in November to chair the commission of the inquiry, which is expected to begin in the Lower Mainland sometime after the Winter Olympics.

Cohen must submit an interim report to the federal government by Aug. 1 and the final report by May 1, 2011.

The information is good news to Parksville's Patrick Proudlock, a member of the Arrowsmith Watershed Coalition Society, who said Friday that he doesn't believe many environment groups in the area are aware that an inquiry had already been called by Ottawa.

He had begun a local campaign calling on Lunney and the government to renew the Conservative's failed parliamentary motion for an independent inquiry after the last major salmon collapse on the Fraser River in 2004 when they were in opposition.

"I wasn't aware of it (the inquiry) but I'm certainly encouraged by it because I'm sure it will help get to the root causes of the collapse of the salmon stocks," Proudlock said.

B.C. New Democrat and Liberal MPs, First Nations, commercial and sport fishing groups and conservation groups have all been calling on the government for action, but until Stephen Harper's announcement there was no evidence that the Tories intended to respond, which led to widespread criticism of the government.

Lunney said the Conservatives were not required to put the issue to a parliamentary motion this time because it's their right, as the ruling party, to initiate the inquiry without one.

"We fully support the need for one," Lunney said.

I know it wont happen, but IMHO the inquiry should be for all salmon and steelhead management on the west coast. The public needs to know that present management practices are endangering ALL species. ( and dont tell me about the wonderful pink runs last fall. They wernt that great and all over the coast other runs are in trouble) [V]

Not that I want to hijack this topic and start another...but I think part of the reason for the collapse has to be related to the number of Salmon Farms we have allowed on this coast. Time for people to stand up and demand closed containment. Morton's research clearly establishes a link - no doubt about it and yet they continue to operate unabated with no movement towards closed containment. Inquire no further....maybe, but I also have to concur that DFO and MELP need a shake up for sure. If they keep up this "Ministry of DO NOTHING" style of management about the only thing they will be able to do is tell us they in fact counted the last salmon and steelhead and confirm they are in fact extinct and are absolutely sure they had nothing to do with it.[}:)][}:)][}:)]

I'd like to think that the many letters i've written that Harper robot might have helped but remember that if you're going after the Fish farmsthat they are under Provincial jurisdiction and Campbell has no intentions on letting that money and those jobs go to Chile.
