Well boys, I was out yesterday and bagged 32 lbs. Exploring new territory turned up some good spots and some not so good spots. I was being fussy and leaving the small ones and the water logged ones, but there were lots of good ones up. And by the looks of it, another week or so and it will be easy pickings for all. I was gathering chanterelles, and there wasn't much of anything else up. I did smell pines in two different areas, but didn't actually find any. No sign of cauliflowers, no boletes, no lobsters, no honeys, only a few old, dry chicken of the woods. But with the good dry month followed by these two wet weeks, I am looking forward to some good picking this Fall.
I did manage to get a little too lost at one point. We decided to let my buddy's self-described "excellent sense of direction" get us back to the truck. That failed, so we checked the compass and our first reaction was to doubt it -and I know better than that. But as soon as we let the compass lead the way, we found the truck no problem. It is an uncomfortable feeling to be lost in the woods with the sun going down. And it is really easy to get turned around with your head down scanning the moss. So let my little slip be a reminder to carry a compass and use it, or take whatever other precautions you need to make it back home before the sun sets. (Incidentally, the best picking we got was while lost.)
For me, I am off to Can Tire today to assemble a proper survival/first aid kit to carry on all future trips, just in case.
FA: I don't sell either, but I am curious about the price. What's your neighbour paying? Would be nice to cover the fuel bill at least.
IFL: What do you do with pines? I've collected them a few times and their unique flavour continues to puzzle me in the kitchen. Do you fry em up and serve with meat, or use as an ingredient? Looking for some delicious suggestions.
