Just for them who are keaners. My neighbor is buying,,,,Which is BS....But that means there is mush out here for us......I do not buy or sell but I love Mushroom Soup as some of you know. Anyone want to go? For fun?

Well boys, I was out yesterday and bagged 32 lbs. Exploring new territory turned up some good spots and some not so good spots. I was being fussy and leaving the small ones and the water logged ones, but there were lots of good ones up. And by the looks of it, another week or so and it will be easy pickings for all. I was gathering chanterelles, and there wasn't much of anything else up. I did smell pines in two different areas, but didn't actually find any. No sign of cauliflowers, no boletes, no lobsters, no honeys, only a few old, dry chicken of the woods. But with the good dry month followed by these two wet weeks, I am looking forward to some good picking this Fall.

I did manage to get a little too lost at one point. We decided to let my buddy's self-described "excellent sense of direction" get us back to the truck. That failed, so we checked the compass and our first reaction was to doubt it -and I know better than that. But as soon as we let the compass lead the way, we found the truck no problem. It is an uncomfortable feeling to be lost in the woods with the sun going down. And it is really easy to get turned around with your head down scanning the moss. So let my little slip be a reminder to carry a compass and use it, or take whatever other precautions you need to make it back home before the sun sets. (Incidentally, the best picking we got was while lost.)

For me, I am off to Can Tire today to assemble a proper survival/first aid kit to carry on all future trips, just in case.

FA: I don't sell either, but I am curious about the price. What's your neighbour paying? Would be nice to cover the fuel bill at least.

IFL: What do you do with pines? I've collected them a few times and their unique flavour continues to puzzle me in the kitchen. Do you fry em up and serve with meat, or use as an ingredient? Looking for some delicious suggestions.

32lbs...WOW I go for a a couple of pounds at a time. The neighbor not sure as for the price all I know is that she has a really loud machine in her back yard for cleaning and sorting and guys keep showing up with totes full of chanterelles. I would bet she has a ad on craigslist.

Ya, 32 lbs is a fair bit. We went a really long way and put in a full day. But they won't go to waste. I have a few tricks for storing them, I eat lots, and I share with friends who aren't so lucky to get out.

It's probably one of those gas powered blower vacuum thingys like they use at my favourite blue berry farm in PA. Serious racket. I wouldn't want to live beside one.

Hey S2, I always pack enough stuff to spend one night in the bush when picking mushrooms. It may seem cumbersome, but it's good piece of mind. Sometimes we need a little scare to keep us on track. Glad you carry a compass and know how to use it. An old timer told me once; "Always set your compass before you head into the bush, and always trust it on the way out." Great advice and glad you found some mushrooms.

Was out yesterday in my old favorite spots....loggers beat me to it, now I can scratch one area off my list for about 150 years. Happens every year....favorite spot= toast.

Had to do some bushwacking to new ground.......did find some but haven't hit the motherlode yet....another week or so should do it.

I always carry:-
cellphone
bearspray
large knife in sheath
Walkie talkies ( I pick with my wife and we seem to get split up lots)
Compass

Before I go in a I have a look at where west is and where the sun is going to set.

I also carry one of those small airhorns that I have on the boat for emergency signalling.

And I also carry a flint....so that if I get stuck for the night I can make a fire for heat.

And I also wear blaze orange vest and cap......so I won't get shot........

I carry a backroads mapbook in the truck......but a map in the bush is only helpfull if you know your EXACT location.....and when you're lost you often don't.

Just set up my little kit in my 10 litre pack. I feel better already. I like using walkie tallkies too. My one pal has a decent pair of motorollas. But seems as though once we are out of yelling range the radios don't really work either. I'll be out again next weekend. Got some friends coming up from Vic to go picking.

And you can bet it'll be a long time before I get cocky and lazy about bush safety again too.

Holmes, still waiting on a proper reply to my PM! What the heck is going on out there???

I'm sure there's lots more good spots out your way though!

Game to go anytime FA ..give me a call..
chantrelle mushrooms and moose steak...Yummy!
( also good on halibut)

As I mentioned in The Kitty thread, I would be interested in doing a mushroom hunt in the Comox Valley. Anyone willing to take out a newbie for some chantrelles would be appreciated.;) eman

Last time I got out it was thanksgiving weekend, and it was poor.
I have not spent much time out around here for 2 years since our hunting was in the interior last. Year. I will PM you on friday and let you know if I am heading out.

I don't have a shift right now for the next 2 weeks after tomorrow. I have a Pepperoni Permit and I have found a few new places I would like to check out my self. They look good on my compass it just means walking them.

That would be nice Car.;) eman

Hi EM.
With the hard frosts that we have had all this week... well there would only be mushy piles of what was once a mushroom.
Next year we should get out earlier in the season. If anyone finds that I am wrong, and there are still a few let us know.

No probs Caroline, I figured as much when I was picking up my morning papers. Maybe some winter spring fishing would be more seasonal one of these days.;) eman
