Three Vancouver Area Fish Harvesters Receive $2,300 in Fines and a One-Year Fishing Prohibition for Illegal Possession of Lingcod and Copper RockfishNovember 20, 2008

NORTH VANCOUVER, B.C. - Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) announced today that enforcement activities undertaken by the Department have led to the conviction of three fish harvesters from the Vancouver area for the illegal possession of 13 copper rockfish and one lingcod, contrary to the Fisheries Act.
On April 14, 2008, Zhi Yong GUO and Ze Jun HU pled guilty, in North Vancouver Provincial Court, to illegal possession of lingcod and copper rockfish, and were ordered to pay the court $1,300 in fines. Both had their fishing licence suspended for one year.
On April 14, 2008, Weng Fen LIU pled not guilty to possession of copper rockfish. The court found Mr. LIU guilty of this charge on September 15, 2008, fined him $1,000 and suspended his fishing licence for one year.
In addition to the fines, fishing gear including a fishing rod, spear gun and tackle box was forfeited to the Crown.
DFO fishery officers apprehended the three accused during a rockfish patrol in the vicinity of West Vancouver on August 6, 2007.
DFO acts to end illegal fishing activity. As part of this work, the Department is asking the general public for information on activities of this nature or any contravention of the Fisheries Act and Regulations.
