excuse my ignorance, I am new to salmon fishing. Last year I went to Ketchican AK and fished for Cohos trolling. My buddy rigged up a cut herring to a small metal flasher followed by a banana weight. I tried to look up this set up online but could not find the diagram. We were trolling and did not have a downrigger. Is it common to troll with a flasher and a bananna sinker when you do not have a downrigger? If I took off the flasher that resembled the standard mooching set up.

Thank you for the input

Yes that's fine if fish are right on top as is the case with much Coho fishing.

Might want to try just the cutplug and weight without the flasher. Deadly!

Or try a weighted diver (Pink Lady or Deep Six) instead of the flasher... try a hoochie instead of a herring now and then.

I'll throw a line out the back with a banana weight, 6" metal dodger and teaser if I need a third line to get down a little deeper. Can usually get about thirty feet down on an 8 oz weight, currents permitting.
Never hurts to have one line up top though
