Mooching setup?

I read all the posts on single action reels. What setup would you buy to see if you like them? I do not need an Islander to start out. One with free spool switch for downrigger and decent drag. Rod and reel.

Daiwa M-One Plus (Now called UTD-400) OR Shimano 4000GT and Shimano Convergence rod.

If you want to go even cheaper than that, get a conventional rod like a Shimano TDR or whatever you have already been using on your downriggers and run the new reel on that. You'll know you like the reel after a few fish. If you dont like it then you're only out the cost of the reel. (Let me know if you fall into the later category :)

I think others will back me up on this, but, I'm pretty sure you're going to love it. Super simple reels to use. Low/easy maintenance, lots of fun, what's not to like!?!

I have fish a med. tech forever and have handled springs up to 50lbs with no problem...however if you are going after rivers inlet fish, I would strong suggest a med. heavy or heavy rod...those springs are just mean up there...

I have a couple of the Shimano reels and I don't like the drag adjuster. It takes a LOT of spinning of the adjuster to set it. They are old, so maybe that is the problem. Is there a way this can be modified?

If they're old, you may just have to replace the washers in the drag. You can order it from Shimano directly or go to ereplacementparts.com.

Are you running a baitcaster type reel now? you are going to love the single action reel...and all your friends will want one.

Either is decent. Some prefer the older version to the newer. I have one of each in the 4000 size. You'll need some Dacron backing to avoid the mono shrinking and cracking the spool. Does the rod come with a short butt and long front grip? In other words is it also a real 'Canadian' downrigger/mooching rod?

What is Wallyworld? I know it's in National Lampoons Vacation, but it looks like the site is for a charter out of NY.
