I’m completing the 300 hour service on my 3.4L 200HP Mercury engines, which requires changing the Impeller on the water pump. I was disappointed to find on the first engine that the impeller had one of the blades installed backwards from the factory (see photo). It’s a little hard to tell in the picture as the impeller that was backwards is 5mm+ shorter than the other five that were facing the proper direction. I assume it shorter because rather than unload at high RPM that the blade that was backwards would load up.instead
Now I know for sure that the rumors that Mercury’s Quality Control/Quality Assurance is garbage are true. I was feeling bad about turning my back on Mercury after 40 years. I’d already made up my mind that I was never buying USA again if there was another option just out principle, but no regrets now.
