Transport Canada seems to want to make wearing lifejackets mandatory for recreational boaters. I dont agree with this myself. Im an adult and I wear it when its appropriate or when I want to. above is the survey link. what does everyone else think about this?
Guess they will sell a lot of inflatables if this proceeds. Probably a good idea from a safety perspective. There was a guy saved from his over-turned tin boat out front of Nanoose last night. He was wearing a life jacket and rescued clinging to his over-turned boat and very hypothermic. Likely the jacket save his butt.
Ottawa shouldn’t go overboard on life jackets Ottawa cannot be expected to remove all possibility of risk from our lives

Coureurs de bois were Canada’s original action heroes. These rebellious bushrangers of New France rejected official efforts to control the entire beaver...
Any drowning is preventable and has long term consequences for the loved ones, families, coworkers and businesses. It is the third leading cause of unintentional death worldwide. Where I live in the Thompson Okanagan area there have been six drownings so far in 2024.
As usual - the law is often developed to protect people from themselves - esp. the least prepared, the least experienced, and the least thoughtful out there rather than the more experienced mariners. I always wear a life jacket if I am in anything but an enclosed wheelhouse/cabin on a boat. And there are some options/styles out there are are reasonably designed for movement/agility.
Having said that - I have been involved in ~3 dozens SARs over the years - and ~half are looking for bodies. If there is no survival suit or lifejacket - you never find the body. No body for closure for the families. And those families carry that trauma/PTSD with them the the rest of their lives. Often that knowledge keeps you going as the days stretch into weeks still looking for bodies.
Something to think about while debating this issue...
Under a certain age make mandatory fine. However I do not want the government telling me what to do.
The world is so screwed up, warnings not to drink antifreeze on the reservoir of our cars!
All about control, sick of it.
