7 inch rigged Berkley power mullet, not even fishing for salmon but jigging for rockfish and lings. 2 20lb springs this year in different areas where you don't even fish for salmon. Bellies full of needle fish. Go figure. The learning never stops. A few years ago trolling off the mouth of the Fraser for socks I put down a cut plug what hits my 7 inch cut plug a 9 inch shaker on massive hooks the strange thing is I never saw the hit doesn't end there I get a big hit and nothing stuck I bring it up and was a little confused for a second I had to think my cutug had no head lol that's how small it was but anyways a shaker hit my plug then a doggie chomped the shaker leaving head and guts dangling .no clue how it didn't stick but the shaker did lol.
Fish are a little strange at times for sure as a rule of thumb you always want to mimic the bait in the area but at times I have run large whole herring in teaser heads and done well not really a huge plug fan 7" spoons work well sometimes to. I only run big gear if there are to many small fish 8 - 12lbers and your constantly catching and releasing in which that usually the deciding factor when it comes to big gear. Some of my largest fish were caught fishing in 200 ft of water gear at 30 ft quick troll with a squirt or small spoon when I have been targeting Coho.
I sometimes drag the old style Magnum Rapaala's for lings and am always surprised at the number of springs they take. They are 10 inches long with the rear treble extended.
Actually have a couple chew up flashers...funny morning that one...had 3 spring grab the flashers that morning.... RVP told me they did way back and was a disbeliever until it happen to me...
That could be a big Ling that hit that flasher instead of a shark. Derby, were you using that flasher on ECVI? Not a heck of a lot of sharks this side other than dogfish that I know about. (Except Sixgills).
Years ago there were numbers of Salmon sharks around mid ECVI...but they got fished out for soup I'm told.
Rockfish will also hit shiny flashers.
As stated before, west coast commies sometimes use a small Gibbs dodger with shiny prism tape on both sides and a hook as an actual Chinook lure.
Then there's the stories where someone uses a really big herring just for giggles and nails a monster Chinook (if it didn't get away first).
I'm Barkley sound, they were springs... after seeing it and checking my flashers ..It happens a couple times a year on the fall run fish heading to the river... had it happen a couple times in gold river last year.... and in Alberni canal when the fish are hanging around.. next time you have your gear pond down and pop the rigger and then nothing ..reel up and your bait is just fine...check your flasher .you would be surprised..
Small lures can also be productive- fluttering little spoons tend to **** them off & cause reactionary bites. I can think of tons of times I picked up big fish on small spoons...haven said that it may work better down here than presenting a freshly cut plug to a waiting hog up north - yep there's something said about matching the hatch...
