Lowrance HDS

I bought a new Lowrance HDS7 and im just starting to figure it out and get used to i but one thing i havent figured out is how can you figure out if the bottoms sand or gravel or ect. does anyone know how you can get the gps to tell you?

When you had it on chart you will see either
s:sand
g: gravel
R:rock
Just like a paper chart. not sure if when you zoom in on them and push enter if it will tell you or not, but I think that it does.

I was speaking to the guru at harbour chandlery and he was saying the biggest bugaboo about all the new sounders is the auto sensitivity. The machines are just not propgramed to manage all the variables that our cosat throws at the machines. Fresh water layers, very fast depth changes, thermoclines and current rips etc. According to him its best to learn how to adjust the sensitivty on you machine to get the best out of it. A tip from me is to keep that Fish ID off its an insult to you angling mind and you mis alot more than you see due to electronic interpretation.

The auto sensitivity on the HDS units is actually pretty good. You can decrease or increase it by plus or minus 2-5 percent and get pretty decent results. The problem with setting it manually is that as you go deeper you need more sensitivity and as you go shallower you need less. IMHO for best all round results, leave it on auto and adjust it up or down to taste. HT to Doc Samson http://www.hightechfishing.com/
