Hey Sundance,

Thanks for the positive post and the update. How do local Victoria fishermen get involved in helping, raising funds and donating either money or time to further enhance our Victoria fishery?

I see the Head Recovery Program is giving away prizes for promotional purposes, another reason to get those heads in.

I won a prize for a chinook head I sent in last year. I caught it off of sooke during the bite me derby. They sent me a letter and pin back sometime in Jan or Feb of this year thanking me for the head and there was also a map that said the fish was out of the columbia river in washington.

Just a few months ago another package showed up on my doorstep, it was a hat and mug and another letter that said I won a secondary prize for the salmon head. Nice gesture! I have another one to send in this year. I haven't sent my coho heads in but I do send all the chinooks in. I should really do both as it is important.

thanks guys for the interest in lower island fish returns ,i am away for ten days ,but will give you a update towards end of month ,as what ends up in the rivers will be input to fish measures next year, goldstream hatchery is our main volanteer base able to put down 2 million eggs from mill bay down to sidney, all the local fishing clubs support it ,monies, net pens brood stock taking ,they do have a web site,

More great news from the Sooke River. As I posted before, last Tue the Sooke Salmon Enhancement Society (owner and operator of the Jack Brooks Hatchery near Sooke) was able to get 42 nice chinooks from the river and was planning two more hauls on Thu and Sat. They cancelled the Sat haul as they got whopping 100 chinooks on Thu! So they have almost 150 chinooks as broodstock this year which is close to some of the best years they ever had. Who would have thought that after this poor fish showing in the ocean this year and the dismal captures last year (12 chinooks)! And I checked out the Sooke potholes today and there is a good number of fish in there. I could make out a few more chinooks and some really large coho. Time to party! [8D][8D]:D

Thanks for sharing the Good News it's something we all need to hear![8D]

I got to join in for one last pass with the net in Sooke River on Saturday. They were looking for a few males...got another 15 to cap it off. BIG springs! And some nice shiny coho too thrown back until later in the Fall.

Last year I was on the fence, and now I'm off it...going to join the sooke salmon enhancement society. I figure anyone that likes taking salmon out of the ocean, you're pretty much honour bound to give what you can back.

So there's the plug for whatever hatchery is closest to where you are or where you fish..join up or give a donation, and keep our fishing future bright!
