Hello everyone, I am new here. I live in Langley and would like to know where to launch and fish in the metro area. I am interested in all opinions, from Tsawwassen to West Vancouver. I am experienced, spent 7 years in Prince Rupert. Any and all comments are welcome and appreciated.

Thanks Dogbreath, is the river easy to navigate from there to the salt water? And once in the straight, can you recommend a couple of areas to try? Is there good fishing close by, or is a trip over to West Van the best bet?

You can also go to ambleside boat ramp in west van. It's free to launch and park and the fishing grounds are right there. It does have its down points as well like non stop walkers going by the launch and low tides can be difficult sometimes

Cannibal Chris.

Thanks Cannibal Chris, that is a good option too. Is that pretty much the best area in the city for Coho and Chinook, from there up to Horseshoe Bay?

Launch-McDonald Beach in Richmond.

Fishing locally is just starting to pick up after the freshet and will only get better see the Lower Mainland thread for details.

I second Dogbreath's motion, McDonald Beach is the best place to launch and is my favorite. However, if you want to fish the mouth of the south arm of the Fraser there is a shorter run from Steveston. There is a boat launch at the end of No. 2 Road in Steveston. It has less parking than McDonald Beach and is only a single lane launch. Being a pink year in the Fraser the south arm of the Fraser will be a popular place. If the seas are too rough out in the Strait for your boat (don't know what you have), you can launch at Steveston and stay in the river for pinks. However with that said...

If new to the area, just one word of caution if fishing at the mouth of the Fraser. With high westerly winds and the right tide and river flow conditions there can be monstrous standing waves out at the river mouth that are scary dangerous. In those conditions the North Arm of the Fraser (McDonald Beach) is a bit safer than the south arm for entering the Strait.

cates park in n.van is good option for you, it is a decent ramp with a good dock,$20 for the day, opens at 6am closes at 10pm, if you are fishing the cap or west van shoreline, almost highway all the way,not much traffic to deal with and only a 15-20 minute run to the mouth of the cap, i would stay clear of ambleside, just too much hassle with parking and tides, vanier park is another good option. you could check out reed point also but would be a bit of a run. macdonald beach is a good choice.
cheers nicnat

The only thing to be careful of with Vanier Park is on the lower tides you may not be able to launch or bring up the boat. On the lower tides you can bottom out even tied up at the very end of the dock finger and your vehicle will be driving on muddy seabed not pavement anymore.

cates is good on any tide, I bring my Grady in and out there,
15 minute run to the cap too, watch the channel markers and just stay to the left side coming out under the second narrows.
if you drift too far to the right side you may find yourself high and dry on the sand bars waiting for the tide to come in

I think this is where I will launch from, looks like you drive out from Langley too. Is it more convenient than driving out to Richmond?

I have full time moorage at mosquito creek, I use cates to haul in and out when the need arises
I would much rather head straight in hwy 1 then the drive to Rmd, as it is now it takes me 40-45 mins from 232& hwy1
