Learning to fish

Hey guys!
So I'm still working on the learning to fish bit and went with a friend of mine yo do some fly fishing. To no ones surprise I caught a big 0. I still haven't caught anything worth keeping off of my boat either. So it got me to thinking... How did y'all learn to fish? What was the magic recipe? Strong lines!

My dad taught me when I was a wee lad. I would suggest going on a charter (not the puuker boats)

I honestly don't think you just "learn" to fish, you basically evolve into a fisherman. Time on the water, any water, is the start of it all, which you have. And in this day and age, there sooooooooo much information on the internet you can sit and read till you fall asleep.

I was lucky when I was younger because of the places I lived back in Ontario. I could jump on my bike and fish within a half an hour or so. I started doing that when I was 5 and caught the bug. Didn't matter what I was fishing for, I was fishing. Today, at 53, it's the same. Except now, I live here in beautiful BC. So many opportunities for that "time on the water". Yes, it does take time.

There's learning how to fish and there's learning the specific ways to fish for salmon, halibut etc. in specific places. I've fished since I was a child but I knew nothing about salmon fishing when I fist got into it about 15 years ago. I was lucky to mEet someone who offered to go with me to a local tackle shop and introduce me to the need gear. He then invited me out on a trip and showed me how to use all that stuff. If you can find a buddy who will do that with you, that's a great way to get started.

I believe fishing is also an aptitude. Some people learn the basics and make an effort but never really become
consistent for whatever reasons, while others seem to show gradual improvement throughout their lives, and are always
learning and getting better. These types are the ones who pay attention to the smallest details, are willing to experiment,
and know that when it comes to fishing, nothing is written in stone.Just my observations over 45 years of doin'
this thing.

Talk to a lot of people that fish in the chuck around here.......

After awhile you will see that regardless of new "killer" lures or "cant live withouts", it's basically the same stuff that catches the same fish in the same place year after year at the same depths....

A lot of places have their own little idiosyncracies........what works there might not work as good someplace else.....

If you're going to be fishing in a specific area for much of the time...then learn about that area....like what tides are best to fish on etc.etc etc etc.

This site has a good amount of archived info on just about everything you need to know to get you catching not fishing.

Don't be afraid to go back a few years in posts...........what worked then still works now.......

You've probably learned things every time you've gone out, regardless of the outcome. After a while all the little things will come together for you and each time a bigger piece of the picture will be visible. The more styles of fishing that you experience, the better your overall understanding will be and you'll start to get a better feel.

Just get out there and learn. I recently took up ocean fishing. I have been doing well despite being completely new to it. Years of river and lake fishing have given me a lot of transferable skills. With the Internet, a wealth of information and knowledge is at your fingertips. Put it to good use and you WILL have success.

Well I used to fish in great slave lake. I caught lots of pike but never anything interesting like a trout. I always loved sailing as a kid. My dad taught me to sail when I was very young now I own my own cruiser but the fishing thing is still very tricky for me to get a handle on it
