Large Commercial Boat Barkley Sound ???

Could be the Hag fish (slime eel) boat that was out there during the tuna shoot out. Sounds like it. Firelight talked to them for a bit. Interesting fishery :).

That's what I was thinking. What do they use them for?

There skin is valuable apparently; it is used for purses and shoes as well as other commodities. There is a huge commercial fishery on the east coast for them as well; Discovery has done a show on it a few years back on the east coast fishery!

Damn, that would be one nasty hold

I was out the other day and pulled up along for a BS session, they are slime eels and being shipped live to Korea, apparently makes their peckers hard.

No doubt those are the most disgusting things I've dredged out of the deep.

And just think, if you kick the bucket in the ocean and end up in Davey Jones' locker, there'll be a fleet of those nasty little buggars making short work of your carcass. Even Steven King couldn't think up something that horrifying.

From Wikipedia - "Hagfish are usually not eaten owing to their repugnant looks, as well as their viscosity and unpleasant habits. However, a particular species, the inshore hagfish, found in the Northwest Pacific,[18] is valued as food in the Korean Peninsula. The hagfish is kept alive and irritated by rattling its container with a stick, prompting it to produce slime in large quantities. This slime is used in a similar manner as egg whites in various forms of cookery in the region."

I talked with them a bit and as was said before they ship to Korea for there hardening properties. I told them they are the only fishery that no one will protest catching those things, they are so gross. They also said they use tuna for bait.
They process them right on board, at the stern the traps are kept on the roof of the processing plant.
