knot,km/hr,m/hr??

I recently got a tip of 3 km/hr trolling speed,25 mph cruise speed. Can't understand how anyone on the salt chuck could use anything but knots-maybe some of you oldtimers can clue me in. 110 nm to seymour narrows to make hw slack (1 nm=1' of lat from the side of your paper chart-not to change anytime soon)-when do we leave? The only speed that makes sense is knots!
 
use what your comfortible with, I troll at 2.2 mph and cruise at 28-30 mph,
I dont use my paper charts, I have a multitude of electronics all in aggreement with each other and if they were not in aggreement
then maybe the paper would come out, but thats just me
 
Knots IS the best measurement for ocean measurement for most of us Old timers who grew up before GPS electronics, but for those who have learned their marine experience sine then, a number of different measurements take hold, he most common is probably MPH. I agree its' whatever you're comfortable with, but its sad to see the true measurement be pushed aside. I think that as long as you are proficient in your conversions (i.e. 1 knot is approx. 1.1515 Miles which is approx 1.6 Km and 1 knots is approx. 1.84 km) then you have all you need.

Oh and you may not USE your paper charts, but if you don't have them on board and you are not able to read them, take a bearing, triangulate your position and plot a course, you shouldn't be out there.

As a guy who has been a certified mariner for 30 years, knots are thee only measurement in speed and distance used commercially today in Canada and world wide. As for non commercial it is anything. I think legally you have to have paper charts onboard for insurance purposes and liability. When batteries die or **** happens those paper charts can save your life. Too much reliance on electronics these days. I know guys who wont even leave the dock without their plotter and sounder working. In order to get professional certification you need to know how to use both. If your on the radio going down a narrow channel at night with commercial traffic coming the other way they will talk to you useing knots, distance in cables etc. , good to know.
