Kits Coast Guard base closure

I dont know about you guys, but I am REALLY pissed with the closure and how it was done. These A4$hoIIs are not fit to run a hotdog stand, let alone a country......

x2. Not impressed with this at all. Opposed by pretty much everyone locally and the only proponents were the feds who rammed it through. I'm not looking forward to the first report of a distress situation that ends up tragically as a result of this short-sightedness but I'm sure it won't be too long.

The busiest Coast Guard station in the country and that idiot Harper says it has to go! Man o man I would like to see him in the water and having to wait for 30 minutes or more.

Please be extra safe on the waters on English Bay, points further North and West and really, anywhere from Point Grey to the south, Gibsons to the west, Squamish to the North and Indian Arm to the East. Your only hope of assistance will now be other boaters. Go out and buy a VHF radio and know how to use it. Be extra dilligent with your electronics, batteries and wiring. Keep your safety gear close at hand. The government has decided that if you are on the water, your life is expendable

well said, treat every outing like you are on your own, do not rely on professional rescue, and maybe keep an extra eye, and ear out for each other....

like others said, it will not take long

X3 The feds seem to have an extra 5 million a year for 5 new people to protect "Freedom of Religion" but have no money to protect thousands of people boating around Vancouver. Perhaps the new program will pray to keep them safe.

burnaby's fire boats are done.. anyone know if north vans are done? sighting costs over run usage..

What about QCI and many places on WCVI that have boats on the water and they have to wait hours?

Seems to me that finding help around Vancouver is still a lot easier (due to number of watercraft in a concentrated area) even without the station than many other areas.

17 minutes isn't all that long when you think of the two fishing dudes 30 miles out in many areas off the coast of BC.

It's the same reason that QCI and WCVI don't have as many police, firemen or ambulance services. Larger populations require more public services strictly from a numbers standpoint. Vancouver has tons of boat traffic, including many 'casual' boaters and tourist who are often the ones who need the most help when things go bad. The fact that the busiest coast guard station in Canada is being closed down over such a small drop in the bucket (budget) is a travesty plain and simple. I've found that people who fish in the QCI and WCVI are usually much more prepared and capable boaters.

Well using that logic then, how would you explain that fact that it was the busiest Coast Guard station in the country. Shouldn't have needed the Coast Guard with all of those pleasure boats around. And as for 17 minutes not being a long time, it's not when you are at a computer, spend 17 minutes in frigid water being weighed down by your sodden clothes and then let me know how long it actually is. And where did you come up with the figure of 17 minutes? What is that in relation to??

Sorry I meant 17 miles, the next closest base in Richmond.

Okay, thanks for the clarification. But I still think closing that Coast Guard station is a dumb and dangerous move and some poor fellow is going to pay for it with his life.

The fact is that Harper has decided that saving money is more important than saving voter's lives. Remember that come next election.

Its a dumb move for an annualized savings of $ 700K. Seems like peanuts in savings considering the risk...

From the CTV story - http://bc.ctvnews.ca/garbage-truck-technology-trumps-kits-coast-guard-base-1.1165396

On Feb 15, the Canadian government gave $1.8 million to Montreal-based company Effenco Development to develop “Engine-Off” technology that could allow garbage trucks to operate hydraulic pumps without running the engine.

Some $3 million was given to fund a new art exhibit in Montreal, more than three times the base’s annual funding.

About $10 million was announced to renovate a recreation centre in Medicine Hat, Alberta, more than 10 times the base’s annual funding.

Annual funding of $5 million a year was announced to fund the Office of Religious Freedom, which would keep the Kits station running for at least five years. That office is established to monitor the safety of religious minorities around the world.

Yesterday alone, one estimate was that 33 cheques had been handed out by Conservative MPs for a total of $15 million – enough to keep the base open for almost two decades.

Fast, who was speaking after a media availability on a different subject, said that he believed the Office of Religious Freedom was an important policy objective.

700,000 a year to run Kits Coast Guard Station is a BS ,
thats to maintain it ,
they have office staff , accountants ,
several captains and coast guard captains are not cheap , nor are the first mates , and the federal index pensions.
maybe that 700k covers the guys who do the dock work but i doubt the boat mechanics , then there is the trucks and gas and insurance.....
The Canadian Coast Guard is a out of control beauracracy.
Remember the Cape Rouge? a seiner that over turned at Sand Heads with all the family , kids and freinds kids aboard?
You could hear the kids inside screaming and knocking on the hull but the Coast Guard would not allow the divers to do the rescue because of regulations and paper work , so they all drowned. My own family hit Race Rocks in a bit of fog and holed and 42' west coast troller full of fuel , they could literally see the largest coast guard station on the west coast and they refused to help with a pump or stand by.... only if life was in immediate danger. 10 minutes after the mayday call a USA helicopter flew over and lowerd a pump and told them to call them for return. It saved a huge oil spill , it saved his season and his boat and maybe his life. The stories are endless.
The Coast Guard needs to be dissolved and re-formed in away that if was meant to be.
Look around lower mainland coastal area and we have North Frazer harbour police boat , South Frazer patrol , Vancouver City police boat (very cool boat) , Vancouver Harbour Patrol boats , .... All these at tax payers expense!!!! should they not ALL be available for rescue and come under one umbrella?
Coast Guard sounds like and seems like a good idea , but has been made disfunctional by lawsuits etc. over the past few years.
They wont tow you , or give u fuel , or provide u with a pump , or give a hoot if your boat sinks . sign form 27 B and they will haul you out of the water, and thats it !

Capt Kook, pls provide your emperical evidence. Here is mine http://www.vancouversun.com/news/Li...sing+Kits+coast+guard+base/7665779/story.html The net savings is $ 700 K. Did you somehow conclude that there wouldn't be costs transferred to Richmond to operate equipment, still maintain it and manage the work effort to get from Richmond to English Bay and beyond as well as still have management to provide leadership? I'm sure the cost to run that place is 5-10 times the savings identified. Thats our point. You don't seem to understand the argument. Not sure what happened with you and the Coast Guard and I have nothing but compassion for anyones family affected by poor service/response from the Coast Guard, but, my experience has always been good.

thats BS capt kook, the CG is more than willing to help ppl in need, whatever that need may be, i have nothing but good things to say about the CG...spend some time in Nootka and tell me that the CG doesnt help ppl......holmes*

Oh Really....ask them for a tow line or a pump ?
Same CG rules Nootka or Hippa
and I have spent alot of time around Nootka but alot more outside edge of Esperanza and Cape Cook , same CG.

yes , form 27 b was BS , just making my point about how the CG has become a defunct service bogged down with too many rules and regulations.
they have to de-regulate to be effective.
