This past Saturday, a few of us in the kayak fishing community, along with his family and friends, brought Art onto the water for one final time. He was able to paddle around in his kayak for a few minutes before boarding Tom's boat and heading into Becher bay. The ocean was there to honour him and the fish were in thick. He was able to land one in short order before returning to the dock where we chatted as a group and he emphasized the importance of fishing and community.
From fellow kayak fisher Adam: "He was one of the original Victoria/South Island/West Shore kayak anglers. He has inspired, and continues to inspire, many in the kayak angling community in the area. With a lot of help, we made some big ticket bucket list items happen. He got back on his yak, and he caught one more salmon. Honored that I could be a part of this. Art, you are an amazing human, and I am proud to call you brother."
Massive thanks to Adam, Tom, Huy, Monty, and the rest of the community who came out to make this happen. Our goal is to have a kayak fishing event in his honour every year.
He paddled out into the big ocean in the sky last night, slowing dragging his cut plug herring, waiting for the next big one to take him for a ride.
