Jumping Butts

Who's seen 'em???

And actually, I meant to say this in the picture post, that 75lb halibut jumped about 3 feet out of the water after it realized it had a harpoon in its guts!!!

I've seen'em go sideways and thrash up a bit, but never clear the water like that.

Millsy once took a retard on a fishing charter and he said that he'd seen it before, but we didn't put a lot of creed into it...

Anyhow. I've seen it and it was COOL!

Gimee the gaff!!!

Back in the day, I once saw a fellow guide try to shoot a fairly large halibut with a .22. That fish skipped across the top of the water for about 20 ft before heading back down to the bottom. Alsmost dragged the angler overboard.[B)] Looked very exciting and the sound track associated with the "adventure" has all of us in my boat laughing our bags off. :D

We warned the guide the night before that all a 22 was going to do to a halibt was **** it off, but he had to learn the hard way [B)]

The halibut was landed a few minutes later and it back at the cleaning table it was clear that a halibut's brain is a pretty small target for a small slug.

Gooey.

Yeah!, next time call it right, like... Government Consultant, News Director or Phailed Phallus

I've had them make an actual run for about 40 feet along the bottom but never seen one jump.

seen quite a few jump one of the first was my first ever decent haly harpooned it and it cleared the water seemed like it was even with the top of the boat it ended up beeing 95lbs.Another time off race rocks i harpooned a big guy and it jumped over and over again cleared the water many times.I've got pics from other boats and there was so much white water you could hardly make out my 21 whaler it ended up 147lbs. They do jump

This one got us pretty wet and did quite a few leaps and bounds. Had another one about 60# clear the water and snap the 2lb ball off mid air well before the poon was even out. Does't happen often, but it's a surprise when it does. i sure wouldn't want it to if you use the shark hook approach.

HaHa clearwaterB political correctness isn't my fortay. Lighten up.

If you don't like what I have to say don't read my posts.

Couple other nice halis today and the weather couldn't be beat. No jumpers though...

Gimee the gaff!!!

Have seen a couple that were jumpers over time. two rather memorable...

Took a fellow commercial fisherman out for hali's one afternoon. In had a bum back, so was insisting that he and another Buddy play all the fish. Had the first fellow well into a chicken of ~ 40 or so pounds when a second rod went off. I grabbed it and instantly knew this was a bigger fish. Back screaming I handed the rod off as quickly as I could. Landed the chicken, then when the next one was boatside, the commercial lad had one look and said "I can gaff that". Huh? OK then Tough Boy, Fill Your Boots! [^]
He hit through the hard part of the head with the gaff, upon which that halibut cleared better than 8 feet of water! Managed to twist the gaff out of it on the way up and so prevented it from going over. When we winched it back out of the mud, I harpooned it the next time. No jump then, but a Good Tussle! Weighed in at 75 pounds! Way to much to gaff IMHO!

Had another load of Newbies that same year, none had ever seen a halibut, let alone played one. The usual fare came aboard initially, ranging from 25 - 35 pounds. Then a damn GOOD hit bending the rod until I thought it might snap! Good scrap, and when it came boatside I could see there was some good weight. Always like to put on a good show for the riders, so pulled out the harpoon and made ready. Aiming very carefully, I planted the harpoon right through it's inward eye. Explosive</u> reaction! That flatty left the water 4 or 5 times with excellent clearance until it subsided! Excellent display for my Troops and high-fives all round!

Just a note: I've had more jump when harpooned through the inward eye than any other hit. I can recall off-hand at least a half dozen that did the leap when so impaled. Want to surprise and delight your anglers, give it a try. You'll likely be impressed! :D

Cheers,
Nog

PS: Osama you Retard! Give me a shout! I've got an itch for flat ones happening! [}:)]
