Juan De Fuca Prize Draws..... Questionable...

Not to stir the pot on peoples feeling about it but heres my perspective. I atteneded the derby this year and was quite mistified on how the derby "Draw" tickets just happened to be pre drawn and not infront of a live audience.pulling them out of someones pocket bound with an elastic isnt a draw in my eyes. Odd that under the lottery act they state a draw must be drawn infront of the intended recipients. As for some of the prizes, I happened to notice that some companies who donated $300 cash prizes were only given to the winner as a $240 prize. And some of the recpients were mostly mixed with higher donation companies as well as many certain family members who help set up the derby. Some companies who donated gear and apparel were never mentioned on there donation, nor were the prizes even in sight at the prize table. Just my thoughts.

From my perspective the process takes a long time already. If the tickets weren't pre-drawn then we would be there until 700 p.m. or later. I have no complaints at all with the pre-draw. Either you trust people (which I do) or you don't.

Terd good luck getting a ticket next year. Do you think maybe companies like alpine or whoever the major sponsers are have a few more derb tickets for there guests so it might seem like one small group is getting them but they have more tickets.Trust me i've been in it since the start and have never won a draw prize yet and i don't think somethings fishy.

Maybe offer to give them a hand next year and check it out for yourself.

Not sure there is a reason to bump this one on the first day ;)

Well as a long time sponsor along with my 3 buddies and there business's i have no problem with how the draw prizes are done. We have been in it for many years and i get my company's name in the booklet and on the draw board, but that is because i have been a long time sponsor. I heard alot of company's mentioned with the donation, but we don't want to be there all night. Great job to George and the crew. Congrats to Ang and Bill well done !!

The draws are kinda funny the way they can go. I won John Wells Charter one year, the very next he won mine. We drew the Pink Salmon (Fenwick/Islander combo) 2 years ago, a prize which Outfitters donates every year. Darren's name was picked out of the bag. He donated it back and we had an impromptu auction on the spot. I've been dry a few years now on the draws, but the food and beer are good!!

Raffle girls, girls for giving out awards ,Ring girls, whatever you want to call them......more of them please![:p] I think that is the bigger issue here ! LOL

I didn't even hear whose names were being called out with those.......um....... you know what I am talking about walking around. Boy wonder, how the $%^ did you notice the rubber band around the pre drawn tickets with those blondies standing right in front of you? [:0]

I gotta go........

I must say it DOES sound a bit weird the way they seem to do it and the way it works out. Great prize [B)] when Sooke Salmon Charters wins a trip with Foghorn Charters and Foghorn Charters wins a trip with Island Outfitters.

That's a difficult part of organizing these derbies ... a pretty small community, in which most people already have access to boats and fishing. The businesses involved that want to donate prizes, what they have to donate might not be a great prize for who wins it -- like whale watching tour for someone who fishes every day.

But I also know about trying to raise prize donations...happy to get whatever you can get!

The Consultants Derby handled this well. If your number is drawn, that's your turn to go to prize table and select whatever you want. If you're not there, you lose your turn. That way everyone gets something they want ... someone without a boat takes the $800 charter, someone with a boat gets the $800 sounder ... both are happy.

But I've also been on the other side ... paid my $50, got a fish in top 10, stoked to win ... a whalewatching tour. People on either side of me won electric downrigger and a nice jacket. Doh. Not saying it isn't a privilege just to take part and the glory of placing, just sayin' I would been happier with either of those prizes! ;)

So I know where they are coming from too.

Consultants Derby worked better...though a negative is it did take a long long time to get through the many prizes.

Yep, thats been the tough one for us JDS...shall see how it goes this year calling out by name instead of number, and writing down on the dry erase to keep things going - none of this calling out the number 4 times stuff. We will also sort the tables from most expensive to least expensive so time isn't spent sifting through $25 dinner certificates looking for a $500 wine tour. I expect it smoother.

This derby is the best ive ever seen run and very professional especially following the rules, not like ive seen in other derbies and seen some very bad things done ie leting a fish bump y buddy out of 1st place 30 mins after the weigh in and dont get me going on the ol wallaby derby.
Like Trev says if you dont like it ask to volunteer for it im sure they would love to have you on board[;);)helping and hey even ask to do the draw ........ dont stir a pot if it doesnt need stirring!!!!

Good luck Wolf

On a side note on all prizes they annouce who gave to the draw and fish prizes then the winner and they tag on a lot of the prizes on to others thats why you hear ie "jacket and more".

Yes they draw every thing in advance so what!!! most derbies do I know the halibut derby is the same trust me they do it to speed things up after 2 long days of fishing we are tired and so are the organizers these people put a lot of time and efort into what they do and I personally thank them for it as its fun and a good time,

So again to the Wetherells and the whole derby executive thanks again for a great job done.

I won a trip with Foghorn? :D Now that would be entertainment!!! I would like to talk on his radio and see if my voice drops a few octaves.

This was never to get people all fired up, just an observation. Ive been incharge of smaller events and definelty a ton of work no dought about it. The Weatherals and the rest of the crew, very impressed with the derby, hands down. All this was intended was as an obervational view. And i do believe i can agree with HighLights, Definetly would have been better if a good lookin blond did the calling lol.
