Jellyfish on lures

Do Jellyfish turn the biters away?
Not sure - I had red stringy goo on my flasher and lure in Bowen Bay yesterday - it was really tough to get off and as soon as I put my clean line down again I got a fish, so I suspect there were no bites while it was on there....

I use lots of smelly jelly when there is jellyfish in the water and swap out gear that's covered, I don't think salmon like jellyfish very much

Pretty sure having anything on the line beyond the release clip will inhibit the bite. Never caught a thing that still had jellyfish goop on it and I've fished salmon for 40+ years! I suppose it may have washed off fighting a fish ----BUT I don't think so! I am very particular about getting every scrap off an anchovy. My 2 cents

I heard that jellyfish burn on salmon rots the gill plates and flesh to the point it leaves large holes and leisions on the fish.eventually killing the fish.

You may only be getting the jellyfish goo on your lure when you bring it up to the surface , hard to say. Jellyfish are usually nearer to the surface feeding on plankton. It will ride down your line, but not past the release clip.

I've noticed the tide change after a non-stop bite, and then had the jelly/red slimy (Red jellyfish) goop that's a real pain to get off on a number of occasions. When I've noticed that happen, you don't see a fish get caught very often afterwards. Very prudent to clean it off completely, but that is even really hard to do sometimes (that and the algae). A lot of times I'll change the gear, if it happens again, fishing is done in that spot IMO, time to move because they aren't going to be around or bite anymore. Maybe I am wrong, but that's what I have observed.

A good supply of towels on board is essential for cleaning off jellyfish. I had a giant stack with me every shift for the couple summers I guided.

I agree with Spring Fever and have never seen a landed salmon with jellyfish on the lure or flasher. I get it every last bit of it off before putting the gear back down.

Fair call on all accounts. They definitely aren't helping to entice, they seem thick in the water this year. I'm going to bring a bucket of soapy water out from now on, even just to wash spoons and what not. I heard lemon joy is good to use
