The wife is tired of lugging around her 17" laptop when she travels, so she is looking for something smaller to web browse, do some skypeing, little book reading and play some mindless games while sitting in an airport of hotel room. It would be wi-fi only, not interested in cellular as those bastards already charge an arm and a leg for their services.

Any suggestions or experiences on what would be best, I know there is lots to chose from. Along with the IPad2, there is the Samsung Galaxey 10.1, Motorola Zoom etc

any help would be appriciated.

Cheers

Hey Ken....

If you want to get away from lugging around a laptop or "mini netbook"......I for one would go with the iPad and that is coming from a guy who is more of a Windows and Blackerry user than anything Apple.

There are so many more useful apps that have been created for it I think it would be the smartest way to go. I am thinking of getting one myself.

As much as some people say "I don't care about all the apps".....there are some really awesome ones that are actually quite useful as opposed to taking a picture of your friend and using an app to turn them into an alien.

Navionics is pretty darn cool as well....a friend of mine takes his iPad on his boat all the time and I always find myself playing around with it. Very cool gadget.

my wifey is lovin her ishit... very good tool for sure. any thing that keeps her happy and busy is a good thing

I have heard excellent reviews of the device who name I cannot remember, that runs the Google Android operating system -- it is halfway in size between an Ipod touch and Ipad ... so it can still fit in a big pocket, but has a useable screen size. I will post the name when I remember....

My wife looked at a blackberry playbook yesterday, was very impressed.

After seeing yo mama's video, I want an Ipad, so I can run iMovies....that's a very cool app.

My wife is an IT specialist and she would go with the I Pad 2. Very user friendly. Check them out and try them before you purchase.

things sure have come a LONG way since these eh?,lmao...holmes*

There's still 2 of those around the house, the wife has about 300 cassete's and likes to listen to them on her "Walkman" once in a while.
Most of the big oilfield projects hand out those Ipods as safety awards, got 3-4 different ones, but the wife tells me that it is the IPAD 2 that she wants now!

r.s. craven

there is a lot of differences between the IPad 1& 2, 2 has dual processors, two cameras and an a smoother OS. You can get either the 1 or 2 in 16, 32 or 64 gigs.

I will stay away from Sony....my personal experience with them has not been good and you pay a lot for a name that used to be good.

Thanks for the info so far!!!

Cheers

I have an iPad 2 and think it does some pretty cool stuff but I hate that it does not support flash. I would look closer at the samsung galaxy tab or blackberry playbook if I had to do it again.

Ken,

Do you have any other Mac stuff? Like an IPhone or G5? Only asking as they are all compatible with each other and can update each other when plugged in together, or if you are thinking about adding a phone or another computer in the future this is a great feature. I have all three, IPhone, G5 and the new IPad 2, love them all, very user friendly, have great support if you have problems and can be updated daily by plugging into your computer and signing into ITunes. They are great for packing around when traveling, on the plane, would most likely fit in the wife's purse.

Hope this helps, also found the best deal on mine at Future Shop in Courtney.

The Motorola Zoom is the only tablet that has built-in GPS. The Navionics app is $13.68 and has all the charts for the BC coast.

Wade

All we have is 3rd gen touch, but the next comp is a Mac. Good info to consider as we will also be upgrading our phones later. Thanks

Do you need a subscription to the GPS?? or does it work with out any cost????? Plus is the Tablet waterproof?? Because Murphy usually rides beside me on the boat.......

There is no charge or subscription it works exactly like your chart plotter with a built-in GPS. No it is not waterproof but you can buy some pretty fancy protection which makes it darn close. The Otterbox is the best one on the market.

I know Apple is coming out with a new Iphone and Itouch in the fall, maybe make sure there isn't a new Ipad a month away before you pull the trigger.

You can say that on just about anything you buy....the Ipad2 just came out and I am sure there will be a new one next year, but if you keep waiting, you will never buy. I have a 3rd gen touch and it is still better than any other mp3 player out there. I already have two camera's and the touch camera is a crappy one, same as the one on the Ipad.

I agree Holmes, the sales person should have informed the buyer, but the research is so easy to do, here is a quick quote I found in 30 seconds on Google.

The iPad 3 could follow hot on the heels of the iPad 2iPad 3 release date

This is the biggest rumour of all: an iPad 3 mere months after the iPad 2. An unnamed Apple employee says that the iPad 2 was a bit of a rush job, and "the third generation iPad is the one to make a song and dance about."Respected Apple watcher John Gruber added fuel to that particular fire by strongly hinting that the iPad 3 release date will be in September 2011.

I am also in agreement that you dont want to wait forever to buy electronics because they do change so fast but this seems to be mere months away. Just Google Ipad 3 and see what pops up.

Get the 3g ipad it has the gps chip so you can run the navionics program...you wont regret it.
I bought the wifi version at London drugs and returned it for the 3g version.
3g makes really useable.

Do you have to pay for the 3g service??? We barely get cell service where I live so paying for a 3g contract for 4 months of fishing is not worth it, and I do not need a vehicle GPS to get me to where I want to go, so I really do not care for that feature.

So other than the Navonics charts, what other benifits would there be with the 3g Ipad???

I do have a GPS for the boat and the Navonics card for that system.

The iPad 3G does not have a built-in GPS. At the moment the only tablet with a built-in GPS is the Motorola xoom. I suspect that the next generation of iPad and other tablets will all have built-in GPS.:D
