I know I ask lots of questions still a newbie..... but im picking up my new elite 5hdi on Saturday. Its going to be the first time I put holes in my boat for the transducer what is the best sealer for this? its fibreglass . please and thank you guys

are you doing a thru hull, or just the transom mount?
if thru hull 3m 5200 is permanent and seals well but a bugger to get out if you ever have to, 4200 works well and comes off easier later if need be. and both are meant for below waterline.
if transom mount I just put a dab of 5200 quick cure on the hole and screw it down

transom mount. 5200 is all that seems to come up researching online . is this the norm to use?

yes, you only need enough of a dab to cover the hole and the screw will pull it in as its screwed in and seal it all up

If it were me I would mount a piece of starboard say 3/4"x4"x6" and screw and sicaflex it to the hull and then mount what ever to it. If you ever change out the transducer you are not putting more holes in the hull just the Starboard.

If I drill holes in my transom for transducers, I generally over size the hole for the screw, then push fiberglass soaked cloth to fill the hole, allow to harden then drill it to the proper size hole for the screws. I use sikaflex or 5200 for the sealant on the screws when mounting. The reason for oversize drilling and filling is to minimize the chance of water hitting the wood in the transom.

Do this if u can....Wish I would have done it myself.

If you use starboard, be aware that there's no adhesive that will bond the starboard to your hull. It's going to be held on with the screws only. You will want to use 4200 or 5200 for the screws themselves.

If your fiberglass transom is cored (with balsa or plywood and many are), the best way to go about this is to over drill the holes you need, undercut the holes to remove some of the core between the two layers of fiberglass, refill the holes with thickened epoxy and then mount a piece of starboard to the transom. 5200 will work anything less than a perfect seal risks water intrusion into the wood core and transom rot over time. The overdrill, epoxy fill, redrill procedure eliminates that problem.
