Timber west told me to leave Comox Lake logging road today because my ATV had no plates, even though it was in the truck box. I do have the mandated liability insurance but no plates. Went to ICBC outlet to buy plates and they have no idea, we phoned ICBC direct and were told it will be a 1 time buy/registration and $48 with a start date of 17 Nov 14. Will require proof of ownership and ICBC agent was unsure of the how yet as they have no details/guidance? Comox logging road is Timber West "private property". Does this give them the right to make up their rules? Now must look to fill tags elsewhere?

Remember when logging companies would provide nice roads and campsites at our favourite lakes, rivers and hunting grounds?

Everyone that used all of that respected it.

What a concept.

What a shame it's gotten to this state because those were good times.

I also remember when those who used the sites actually respected them and the logging companies equipment. Can hardly blame them now after all the vandalism from a few googans who spoiled it for the rest of us law abiding citizens who were thankful for the opportunity to use these places.

Yup..just last year someone up behind my place shot up a bunch of logging company equipment..just takes one to ruin it for the rest...:(

I guess the plate gives them some hope of knowing or finding out who you are in the event you are a vandal.

Maybe this kind of vandalism would happen less if MORE people had access, more eyes out there, better chance of somebody driving by etc. I've left my equipment in the bush with no problems but sure worried about it. Catching some douche vandalizing equipment would be like an early Christmas present..........

I think back in the day nobody screwed with logging equipment because a lot of folks worked in the woods or mills. If you sabotaged the stuff, you were only hurting yourself.

LOL, well said.

TW isn't locking gates and hassling sportsmen to protect equipment or their own liability. They don't want the public to see their apocalyptic logging practices. Don't be so naive.

I suggest you take your quad wherever the hell you want. The worst they can do is ask you to leave, and possibly charge you with trespassing. But the burden of proof for trespass would be very difficult for TW to achieve because they would have to prove there was adequate signage at every point you could have entered at. Further, they would open up the issue of who owns the road base. This is a very contentious point and that is the last thing TW wants brought up in court.

You gotta ask yourself... If TW is constantly shooing people off their land, and threatening the good natured sporting folk over trespass, how is it not a single person has been charged and not a single person has stood in court over it?

Oh, and by the way, unless the person asking you to leave is a legal agent of TW (I.e. Employee, contracted security person, retained attorney) they cannot act on behalf of the company. That means they cannot kick you out, or even affect a citizens' arrest. So I say take your chances and do whatever you want.

Well I am back from my woods visit. I now know why Timber West wants to keep all hunters of their land. If it was my land KNOWBODY would be going in. The discussing disregard for the bush and what we have is sickening. Lucky cans by the tons, Halloween candy wrappers all over and toilet paper from runny nose's litter all roadsides. I never took a single can in but have a big bag for returns. No wonder they give reasons to keep us out, they should just tell it as it has been for the last 10 days. Unbelievable, what is happening?

Anybody register their quads yet? I understand the ICBC agents have to sight them-bit of a pain to load them up. Guess then they'll be after PST/GST just like a boat-going back- God knows how long. I don't even know where my bills of sale are I've had them so long. If anybody has done it-let us know how it goes as they are a little short on the how to on their web site

Pretty sure the policy is now enforced to keep people out because of past accidents , i know in Nanaimo lakes the policy has been in place for a few years now, only time you can ride up there now is hunting season unless you have a licensed plated bike . A couple years back a group went up there and destroyed a couple hundred thousand dollars worth of logging equipment. I also know of a couple fatalities that have happened over the years up there to do with all terrain vehicles..TW is covering their butt. It has nothing to do with their logging practices and more to do with not getting hit and killed by a fully loaded logging truck..

I am confused at how an aluminum license plate will stop idiots from doing stupid things? Maybe the plan will be to hold people responsible for their actions but I highly doubt that in todays Canada. Insurance to stop the liability stupid suing is a good thing, but as for plates? I spoke to my family who live in Ont, wow plate fees, insurance and trail usage fees equal $450 per machine, times that by 4 machines in summer/fall and 4 snow mobiles in winter. That hurts, no wonder they do less riding. Lets all hope BC does not end up like that.

2 atv fatalities in the past year in nanaimo lakes, that and the vandalism is what has closed it off for so many responsible riders.. I highly recommend the off-road insurance for anyone that wants to ride in the back country...

Agreed, all riders and users of the outdoors, crown or not your private property should already be members of the BCWF as insurance is included with annual dues. Its only the plate issue I have a problem with as I think it only a next year and certainly a future annual tax grab. I cannot see how a plate will stop stupid people from doing stupid things. They tried that with many other "laws" and historically it never works. Think long gun registry.
