I Didn't Know Whether to Laugh or Cry

Just got back from a well known/stocked local tackle store.

I watched some guy spend $155.00 for trolling gear to catch Pinks-PINKS FFS!!!

Poor bastid has no clue that they will take any offering at all and of course staff were only too Happy to indulge the guy.

Doesn't take long tospend 150$ 4 or 5 flashers a dozen rigged pink hootchies , wieghts, it all ads up. Maybe he's just starting out and has to start from scratch.

You could probably buy a tonne of pinks for cheaper but the guy probably is just starting out and just bought 155 bucks worth of pinks + fun.... He coulda spent $800 on a charter to catch pinks :p (Sorry guides on the board....I had too) ;)

Not to mention helping keeping the doors open of shop.

Everyone starts somewhere

Thats nothin i've spent close to $1200 in the last few weeks and I still have no idea what i'm doing !! ;-)

He got off fairly cheaply. I go to the tackle store and sneeze and the guy says that will be $29.95!!! I keep looking for garage sales but all i find is baby cloths and nick knacks.

Yes tackle can be expensive but my whole point is that he was talking about targeting Pink Salmon-the dumbest mutt in the ocean/easiest thing to catch short of a Lingcod.

The idea that they only take lures in the red colour spectrum is false-in fact they'll take small to medium sized spoons, hootchies any colour, are crazy for Apexes and only the biggest plugs deter them.

If you really want a Pink start with the odd coloured lures you never use/keep in an old box in the garage-they'll love it.

With all due respect Carl, you must be getting bored to be having such a laugh (or crying out) at a guy spending $155.00 to get set up for Pinks. Are we to assume this guy had a tackle box full of unused gear in all mix of colours from which to choose? Perhaps this guy had no gear and wanted a supply or wanted some pink gear to add to his arsnel? I think you may be making some assumptions.

He may not have time to search for older gear in his garage or doesn’t have a garage!! ….or simply just prefers to buy new stuff. Remember that you are retired and have more time to search around old garages and tackle boxes. I rarely find old flashers and other old gear all that good anyway. That’s just me though. When trolling for pinks would you want to miss that Chinook or coho bite due to crappy old dull flasher ?

Spending $155.00 on any tackle for any purpose is not very expensive. If he spent all the $155.00 on one colour and one type of mini plankton ( MP16 perhaps) then I could agree with you that this would not the best way to spend $155 bucks. Even at that, however, he could always use this pink mp for other purposes as well. Mixing and matching/combining pink mp’s with glow, UV or other colours for Pinks, Sockeye, Coho, Chinook and even Chum for that matter.

Let’s face it; we all spend money on gear that is probably not necessary. Yes you can get Pinks easily on lots of different gear. Let’s laugh at ourselves as fisherman though , not just this guy. At least he didn’t waist 8 bucks a tray on anchovies for the Pinks !!

If the guy is enjoying himself and catching pinks with his new gear then who cares? If it works who really cares? Perhaps he wants to keep things simple? Maybe he's taking his kids out and they like pink. I know my daughter insists on pink MP hootchies ! I need several for her to play with!

PS Personally I would have got him into 4 spinning outfits and a Bradley smoker as well. That would be close to a grand more than the trolling gear......and all just for the Pinks ? ;-)

That's ok....Carl will guide Mr.InquiringFisher into all the pinks he can shake a fishing rod at with his own boat..and save the guy a bundle. As a matter of fact, pinks are so dumb, they'll swim right into your hands! Carl will guide the customer by using some old Number 7 Clendon Stewarts, some old beat up original 6" inch Tomic plugs, and of course, some half blue/half Nickel No. 6 Coyote spoons because pinks will catch bite anything...they're so dumb...and he'll do it for free too because he's such a good sporting samitarian!

Meanwhile, us guides will sit by idle, catching nothing, in amazement, using our pink squirts, spinners and spoons wondering Y the Frick Carl Z. guide circles around us...while we watch Mr. InquiringFisher's jaw drop in amazement.

Heck, why not spend Mr. InquiringFisher to Save-on-Foods to Pink up at $2.50/fish? Save Mr.InquiringFisher a bundle, pinks aren't worth spending money on tackle anyways!

Carl Z for top rod on Pinks!

:p :) :) :)

You guys just don't get it but I'm not surprised-it's all about selling up-you are sold up constantly and once someone points out to you that you've been taken you insist you like paying more.

OK whatever.....

Evening Carl... I don't think that most of the posts above really seemed to be missing what you said but target your critcism of the buyer due to his spending money on pink tackle. You did not mentioned your disgust of the seller doing a brutal 'upsale' job of the buyer. You never mentioned 'upsale' at all. The forum responses seem to simply disagree with you being this critical of him spending $155.00 on Pink gear - no matter what type of 'upsale' happened or didn't happen at the shop.
Perhaps you should have mentioned your displeasure and bewilderment of the seller if you felt this was an upsale job.
Either way though on the topic of upsale, I disagree that this was a big 'upsale' issue in action. Spending $155.00 on trolling gear prior to Pink season is not a lot if you don't assume he aleady was a regular saltwater guy and /or already had tons of old trolling gear sitting in a garage tackle box. Like I said before, I would have sold the guy a grand in spinning gear and a Bradley smoker for pink season......maybe thats an 'upsale' ....but is it really ?

You likely would be able to get that outfit for under 155.00 [for only one outfit] but don't tell Dogbreath you bought it just for Pink fishing ! lol .....just kidding Carl ;-)

The way it is going it won't be long and we'll only be allowed to fish every 2nd year and pinks will be the only species left available to us.
