I always dreamed on this....

Haha... not very sporty... They use these reels in new zealand as well when fishing extremely deep, cant say I blame them.
Here in BC I could only really picture using them for black cod, but you'd never know if you had a bite. Or use them for any old fish if you are the laziest person on earth.

Hali reels for old guys!

that would be the seaborg electronic assist reel....a base in the electronic reel market. Used for deep water game fishing....catching things you don't know are down there....

I've wanted one (or to rig my reel with a power drill, (seen it done)) for the purpose to drop a line down 6-800ft in over a thousand feet of water...to see what happens. strictly for curiousity purposes, but I've watched some deep water fishing shows and some of the creatures that come up are other worldly. To think things don't exsist down deep on the west is kidding yourself...its a big world down there...one of those reals will get you to it.

That seaborg retails for around $650US i believe

What's not sporty? It's just a levelwind reel with an optional automatic weight recovery system. :)
If you only use the electrics to retrieve for checking your bait it's just as sporty as fishing a levelwind on an electric downrigger IMHO.

I've fished 800 feet with pure electric reels (no crank and that's not sporty) and one can easily feel the bite of a 2lb snapper with braid. It's freaky how connected you feel to the bite.
