How To Make Coho Fishing a Snap-Literally!

This is an old trick that I trotted out fishing with Osama last year-it's always good to wake people up/make 'em jump to the rod.

Use your standard favourite Apex or small flashy spoon or fly behind a 1 ounce sinker dragged behind the boat as per SOP.

Take some line from the rod tip and twist a loop then attach a standard rubber band using a cat's paw.

Now loop the cat's paw around the handle of the reel or the first guide of the rod whatever makes the most sense with your rod holders.

The resulting SNAP when the Coho grabs the lure makes everyone aboard jump and grab for the rod-all kinds of laughs and keeps the crew interested-try it and see! [8D]

that sounds nuts!! i'm going to try that you might actually get better solid hookup that way too , we always have some light gear ontop when the coho are out and even got a 18 pound spring one time!

You can always just tie the rubber band-use whatever works for you.

Also-lowering the angle of entry for the line like this sometimes gives the lure a bit better action.

It's along the same concept of when we fish for big marlin/tuna down south with bridaling tuna on the troll
simply set your tuna out on a slow troll then from the rod down to a kleet on the rear of the boat goes the elastic band....
Once something substantial goes off all hell breaks lose...

That was alsot of fun Dogbreath ....and thanks for showing us that idea. I think the only problem with the set up the way we had it is the elastic band gave way too easily not providing quite enough hold so that the fish got a good set of the hook. Many of the coho weren't hooking up ....also with the line being pulled almost 180 degrees straight down the rod to the reel provided to much sudden slack when the elastic broke. If the fishing line was attached by the elastic to a holding point at less of an angle and out closer to the rod tip (as like outrigger set up ) hook ups might increase.
In our case we didn't really care as we landed enough coho anyway and the "snap" was louder the way you rigged it !!
