Heading out this weekend and was wondering if anybody has the tricks to catch sockeye in the salt. Down here in the states we are still allowed to keep them so I would love to give it a shot. Thanks for any hints

Not sure what FOC regs and Fraser stocks have to do w/ the Washington state fishery...I must be missing something.

Anyway too the point, as far as socks go follow the 4 S's. Troll slow, straight tacks, small MP size hootchies (#15/16) in pinkish/red colors w/ a 27" leader behind a flasher and stack 2 lines (or more) each d/r with lots of flash to attract schooling fish. If you follow this I assume you will catch some.

Good luck!

Kind of frosts you that Washington State allows fishing our Fraser river stocks that are depressed and closed for Canadians to harvest. They know these trans border fish are all heading to the Fraser so they permit fishing there. There not quite as generous down there for openings on there own Salmon.

I would worry about the nets.the sporties on the salt don't get very many, and we don't really target them anyway.

see you all in Bamfield on the 22nd.

Kinda ballsie to be asking us Canucks who are releasing all sockeye in hopes of saving the run how to catch them. I know how to catch them, but won't be sharing that info with anyone. I let all my sockeye go in hopes they make it to spawn and improve our chances at an opening in 4 years. I don't let them go so that someone else can catch them behind me.

Sporties can take a considerable quantity of Sockeye if they know what they're doing. Correct me if I'm mistaken, but doesn't Washington State also permit retention of wild Coho in our trans border waters. These waters are terminal fisheries for all our Fraser river stocks. Canadians are not permitted to take wild Coho near the Fraser river mouth. These Fraser and tributaries stocks are rarely permited to be harvested unless hatchery fish. As a matter of fact it was only recently that the regs were changed to allow retention of hatchery Coho off the Fraser river mouth. Prior to a year or two ago all Coho had to be released off the river mouth. Just saying, there seems a little bit of a double standard with the Washington State regs.

Not trying to start a fight with you guys, but it seems that deliberately targeting Canadian fish that are in a depressed state is foolhardy at best, and very conservationally unsound. Be a good neighbour and steer clear of stocks that need protection. As they say it's a free country, so do as you will, but common sense says to give depressed stocks a pass. Thanks guys.
