how close is to close?

So when anchoring for halibut, how close to another boat is to close? Because you were at a spot before someone else showed up how far away should that person go? Nobody owns a spot, I've been sitting on the river bank for an hour waitin for it to get light to get the first couple of casts in and then as soon as it gets light someone else comes out of the bush and stands right beside you,you can't ask him to leave.Everybody is complaining about people coming close and stealing their waypoints, how about when the bite is on at kirby and a guide radios a few people and all of a sudden there is a whole wack of guide boats there. How is that any different then us coming to where your catching fish?

we all get along ,, now why don't you...

I don't care if bite is on or not. If my boat can't swing freely in a radius on my anchor system then you are to close. I think most guys on here will agree. Smiley66

YIP!

If your close enough to chat I will chat. If you mess with the swing/gear... I get peed off. Lotsa fish in the sea..... and spots to go with them.

Get anything today???? ....Me..... Nope

I think I might just support a pirate rebellion. If they come to close you....You board thier boats and and steal their liquor and women. Sounds like a hole new sport. When should we start.

YIP, totally agree. No one wants a guy swinging into his anchor spot, gets dangerous and who needs the NASCar bump and grind fishing experience. Trick is to try to get along, and be observant.

So as long as the boats can swing around in a full radius without any problem thats good enough, thanks.Thats the answer I was looking for

I like to use 500m when anchoring i never drop within 500m because my anchor is 600ft of rope and i dont want to take any chances

thanks wolf. down this way folks usually drift so there is a real lack of information given your techniques. i had no idea that amount of line that is being used to anchor and tie off. i can better understand just why it becomes not only a nusiance but could be down right dangerous for all concerned to crowd in. thanks for the clarification.

I think you are safe! 500 meters = 5 1/2 football fields, or approximately 1/3 mile! :)

FYI... the biggest problem is the crossing of anchor lines due to the different amount of swing of the boats; there by the tangling and/or fowling one or both anchors. A boat with more chain and/or less scope will swing less than a boat with no chain and/or more scope on the rode. I can tell immediately if someone knows what they are doing anchoring and if there is going to be problems just by how they approach and set their anchor.

If anchored in 200 feet of water, using 600 ft of rope, that gives you a scope of approximately 3:1. Which means the anchor will probably hold while and provided there is no winds and/or no currents. As soon as either comes into play, a 3:1 scope will probably drag anchor!

I don't know about you guys but I like to come by late & tell em we're out for a salmon fish left the hali anchor back at the dock, looks like you're in a good spot mind if we tie off the back of ya.
Tried that with buddy(George)a few years back on Border Bank after we landed HALI #3 he was none to pleased having only landing one .Fortunate for us he lost track on the count & said if you get another I'm cutting you F***** loose before he could finish the sentence we were into our 4th. as we drifted away i could hear him mutter something about a... scent trail.LOAO
