Homemade Prawn pellets

Anyone have a secret recipe for making these at home. Trying to get away from the glorified cat food that costs 5x more…

I’ve tried a couple things ie cat kibbles, dog kibbles, soaking them in some herring oil laced water, adding some chopped herring etc. But they don’t seem to be as effective as the proper pellets. Could just be luck tho, haven’t tried too much.

Please post your ideas! And dm me your honey holes 😏

I have been experimenting with my discarded seafood bits. ( salmon, lingcod, herring ) either with cutting into small chunks or added to the blender. The skin doesn’t blend up too well.
But the one thing that blends well and seems to fish well is the discarded prawn heads. It looks like a pink smoothie when it’s ground up. I’ll add some pellets to my bait cups too because it’s fairly runny and won’t last all day. But I usually only soak my traps for a few hours or so.

I have some factory commercial bait for sale, works dynamite, super oily. I messed with making it for a bit but its hard to meet the protein requirements. 12 bucks a kilo If you're interested

Where you located? I’m in Pitt meadows, with frequent trips to the Bowen Island area…

Tried a homemade recipe myself, seemed to work just fine. Cat food, dog food, puréed herring (wife didn’t like that too much lol) and some fish sauce from the fridge, and a bit of water. Mixed and soaked overnight. Produced fairly well. I’ll add some prawn heads next time too.

What did you get in the other three traps?

Funny, one set got all the prawn, the other set got zilch. 1/2 mile from each other, both usually good spots 🤷‍♂️
It's always about hitting the honey hole. I don't think bait has much to do with it to be honest. I find you get more consistency within two sets placed close together if you get a current swing within your soak. I don't prawn for much longer than two hours anymore. If I have four hours I'd rather do 2x two hour sets. Even on my best spots I can be just off the mark and come up with blanks.

Gad damn that makes sense. That’s why you’re the legend.

I guess I've yet to find a honey hole then. The only luck I've had is in Stuart Channel, despite several attempts in Saanich Inlet, Satellite Channel etc.

Could also be a trap or weight issue. I can't solve all of your problems 😉. Kidding obviously, you'll find em. Location and a clean drop is everything though.

I'm still wondering what happened this past summer, when almost none of my usual producing marks delivered much. Drop sites that were good for 30-60 prawns per trap in 2024 were 0-10 a year later. Same equipment, same bait, same methodology. But crabbing was much better for me. Go figure.

I had the identical experience; prawns were scarce but crabs were plentiful. The summer of 2024 was the opposite for me.
