I'm coming to Vancouver Island on a family holiday next summer (early July).

Back home here in Ireland I mainly sea fish (previously did a lot of fly fishing for trout).

My first question (of many between now and next July) is how accessible is fishing on the Island, either from the shore or on the lakes & rivers. I would love to book into a lodge and have guides take me to all the best spots but theres no way I could afford it. Any ideas?

thanks in advance,

Alan (from Belfast)

Where on the Island are you going to be based?

We haven't decided yet. We're heading to BC for 3 weeks. Some of this time will be spent with by sister in law and her family in Vancouver (unfortunately they are all non-anglers).

We'll be travelling around the Island and are likely to be in Tofino at some point and also Nanaimo.

I'll have a better idea in a few weeks.

If you plan to be on south-west Vancouver Island, shoot me an email or PM when the time gets closer. I work with guides in Sooke and Port Renfrew (west of Victoria), and try to help small groups get into charters (putting together groups, or adding a single person). All the charters around here are by the boat, not by the person.

For DIY, there's a few places around Sooke you can fish from shore and have a hope of catching a fish. Around Tofino too.

In Ucluelet, you can get onto a Canadian Princess boat pretty cheap, an easy way to get a little taste of offshore fishing. It is a bit haywire though, 20 or more people jigging all at once, tangled lines and so on. Still, pretty good chance of catching a fish.

Hope this helps.

Im sure there would be guys on the board that would be willing to take you out for a day too ;)

Guys, thanks for your responses.

I'll keep an eye on this board and will get back in touch when I have a better idea where and when we'll be in the area.

Thanks again.

Alan.

nobuzz, if you are on the Island in mid July and would like to fly fish for salmon, I would suggest the Eve River. It is a 2 1/2 hr. drive up Island from Nanaimo, and there we fish for Pink Salmon. They are about 4-6 lbs on average and great sport on a 5 or 6 wt. rod. Easy access and easy river to fish, however, I would suggest waders as the water is quite chilly. There is also a man made campground for the overnighters. If you need any further info about this area and the equipment necessary just drop me an email and I'll try and answer any questions.

I agree, good value for your fishing dollar. The smaller boats (42 ft) carry up to 14 fishers and the 53 footers carry up to 22.

good sockeye salmon fishing in Port Alberni...easy limits...family fun fishing....plenty of fishing charters in this town

peak time for sockeye fishing-mid-June-July

Betcha $100 there is not a sockeye opening next season:(

Just saying...

Go with the beach or the puker fleet for sure.

Gimee the gaff!!!
