Hiring a Guide

Looking at hiring a guide to run my boat a few days this summer. The guy I have in mind has his 100 ton Fishmaster 4. Is this enough to run my 25 Grady or does he need all the other courses? Like the SVOP, MED, Radio. Can't seem to get a straight answer from TC.

Thanks

Up to 15 tons all that is required is SVOP, Med-A3, ROC-M and some first aid.
Your boat should have a C license # as well and, all the 'proper' gear that goes along with that.
If you don't have a C-license # now, you probably won't get it till the end of summer. The feds are super slow handing out that kind of documentation.
Skipper insurance is an extra $500/year too. gl

If your boat is under 5 tons the guide must have his SVOP and everything that goes along with that ticket. Your boat must be "C" licensed with appropriate insurance and MUST be Transport Canada Certifed (with a sticker). If you are only looking to cover your operating costs for the boat I would think hard about doing this as your boat will be "C" licensed and in my opinion will affect the resale of that vessel. If you are looking to get into the business in a full time matter with a business around that vessel then it may make sense. Now if you boat is over 5 tons you may have a bunch of issues as far are guides and certification is concerned. 60 ton masters tickets may be required and the boat certification is much more complex. TC rarley has a straight answer for anything. With the amount of RCMP and Harbour partrol boats boarding boats over the past year I would make sure I have ALL my ducks in a row or you may have to pay fines !! My 2 cents worth.

It's actually up to 5GT like bighog said. But Wade's boat is under that...however, I know that if you have a boat over 5GT and already had your limited masters you don't need your SVOP...as LM is higher in qualification....so I'd assume that it would be fine Wade.

SVOP certification

Specifically
vessels other than tugs and fishing boats, of 5 gross tons and less on near coastal class 2 voyages or sheltered waters. And for
fishing vessels up to 15 tons gross (or 12 meters over all) on near coastal voyages class 2.

What are you guys driving?

If you do a lil search on here, you'll see a thread about this same issue from last year around this time and a quote right from TC's page supporting what I said above. Also, we are not driving fishing vessels, as those are defined as those operating in commercial fisheries, we are driving passenger vessels (mine happens to be over 5GT as well...barely, but still over). Off topic from Wade's question though.

Sorry for the delay in commenting was out of Internet service. So David, a 100ton Fishmaster 4 should be plenty to run my boat if needed right? If your saying a 60ton will a 100 should. My buddy in question is just looking for some possible relief work through the summer and was wondering what else would be needed in order to hop on a charter boat and go. Has hundreds of hours both rec and commerical and just finished his 100 ton.

Thanks

Ok, radio is part the 100 ton course so that's covered and MEdd are done. Should be good to go then, willstill try and get an answer from TC.

Thanks guys.

The Boat it's self needs to be totally compliant also, High water alarms, if inboard motors extinguishing system and or ports, stability tests, labeling, life jackets not PFD's, gas shut down, fire and or high temp alarm ......... the list goes on and on.
There are a ton of guys that just think they can get a C # along with ROC, SVOP and be ready to go This could not be FURTHER from the truth !

We that are compliant have had to put out Lots of $$$$$, I would love to see TPCanada start HAMMERING those that GUIDE ILLEGALLY !

Just a question while were on the topic my first aid expired so I need to do my Standard First Aid with Marine Endosement course and the lady at St Johns Ambulance tells me I need a CSN # from Transport Canada before they can give me the Marine Endorsement. Do any of you guys know what the hell shes talking about? I dont remember getting this # with any of the other pile of stuff we had to do. Did we get this when we got our sticker?? Or our C #s?

I think it's a CDN number, and it's new in the last couple years for sure.

None of my meds or SVOP had them but when I renewed first aid a couple weeks ago was told I had to have one!!

Took the course in the meantime but they won't give me the marine part until I grab my gay little number...

so fun...

Just for the record, myself, my boat are in full compliance with all TC regulations, sticker in the window. Just want to make sure that if I want a day off I can send this guy out to run my boat and still be fully insured having him run it. Thanks for the info guys and am thinking that I should be good to go. Like I said, will still try and get an answer out of TC but wanted to know what other info was out there.

Got lucky on my CND # also, got mine working for Coast Guard years ago, glad I have it now.

Hell, ill do it 4 you wade, i got no tickets, no courses, I dont drink that much on the watter, From what ive seen a guy doesnt need much more than that to be a guide up here!!
