birds galore out there today. at least 4 different types, all working the water. no boats though. too windy for me.

yep, i saw a several boats travelling to and from the grounds. there are a ton of birds about 200 yards off shore too.

gill nets opened yesterday that's why you saw some seiners in parksville they are packers. my source figured the seines were 1500 tons over the quota. what a shame.

Hey if you want herring for halibut fishing crabbing, prawning etc get down to french creek now at low tide and fill as many 5 gal buckets as you please, herring all over the beach where the boats unload, we got 40 gallons last night we were in them knee deep and nice and fresh. With a little salt brine and a lot of zip lock freezer bags, you got your bait and then some for the whole season, the herring have gotten smaller over the last few years largest female I saw last night was approx 11" and the smallest was about 5"

If you jig them are they decent enough for salmon fishing or just critters.?
If so, what do you put in your bucket of water to kill them, a couple drops of bleach maybe? Brine after freezing or before?

When there used to be herring in Active Pass I used to buy a product called Pro Cure or something like that. It worked really well. The herring were basically cured by the time I got back to the ramp at Sidney.

I haven't been able to catch a herring out at Active for years. Maybe my timing stinks, but I think the herring have been fished out of that area.

Tortuga, place the herring in a bucket with salt water in it and they will end up dying in 30 - 60 min due to lack of oxygen. No need to do anything. They will get riggor mortis after that, then straigthen them out and then freeze them taking care not to remove scales. I will brine them when they get thawed prior to use.

Caught a whack of them today. Beautiful fish but many are on the small size. Lots were only 5-7 inches. A few nice fat females about 9-10 inches and filled with eggs. D-E-L-I-C-I-O-U-S.

Heading over again tomorrow. Gonna give it another try. Will try and smoke a bunch.
