HD radar, is it worth the extra cost??

All though not really practical for fast moving boats it is neat to play with when your trolling in the fog and fishing is slow.
M.A.R.P.A Mini Automatic Radar Plotting Aid.
I will PM you a manuel I down loaded from Raymarine It won't include and HD functions.

Eastpoint, I'm looking at installing HD Radar as well on my boat. I looked around and felt the Garmin GMR18 HD was the best option with a 740S plotter which is a 7 inch screen. Yours looks very impressive. Why did you opt for Raymarine, and, did you buy in vancouver and if so can you recommend the place? Did you look at Garmin?

If you are really serious about a proven Radar, there are 2 big names Raymarine & Faruno, Garmine are great at gps, but don't have a long standing history in Radar. I'm not saying they wouldn't be good or reliable, but do your home work. Good luck.

Very impressive photos!

I've been on a few boats that have RayMarine units (not HD) and they are not near as impressive as your photos. I would consider it money well spent.

Last boat I was on had an older RM unit and for the life of me, I couldn't get it to follow the boat automatically - had to continually move the map manually to keep the boat on the page.

I personally find the Lowrance units to be more user friendly, but then I have one on my boat (and in my truck!) so I've had the time to get to know it. When on someone elses boat, I only have limited time to get to know it and not everyone enjoys having you fiddle with the boat electronics! :(

Well done!

I was told by a friend who works in the marine industry exactly what Haliloggeer said. Most commercial guys use either Furuno or Raymarine. For me Raymarine was a bit better price, and I had a small RM plotter/sounder on my old boat that I liked.

That said out of frustration with the delay on the raymarine system I had on order, I bought a Furuno sounder LS-4100 that works very well. I wanted to use my new boat but did not want to br travelling around blind. With the Furuno I can see bottom at 30mph at 300' deep. I have since got the raymaine DSM30 unit that will plug into my C120W plotter, not installed yet but I am curious to see how it compares to the Furuno.
