Hardy Longstones

So I have the chance to pick up a couple of Hardy Longstones in great shape for $300 for the two.

My question is, are they worth it?
Will they be any better than what I already have?

I have done the search and looked on the net, but I believe a lot of the comments are from people who WISH they had a Hardy

I already have 7 mooching reels, 4 Shimano's (4000's), two Diawa's (one old 275 and the other a 375) and a Mahama. My GF thinks I have enough and that I should be saving for the house we want to build, but I keep telling her that there never is enough gear.:D

I have been told that there is nothing better that hearing a longstone with a big spring on the other end.

I like the Longstones, in fact i would rather have them over Islander's
(personal preference)
They cost about $350.00 each new, so that's a good price if they are decent shape.

Their clicker has one of the best/loudest sounds of all the mooching reels on the market only Peetz can match them.

Love my Longstone. Just dont try to fight any seals for your salmon with them the handles can bend. lol. I've had mine for over thirty years and I still get pumped when I play a nice fish on it. I wish I could turn the clicker on more, because the sound is unmistakable, but nowadays that's asking for trouble. eman

I use a Longstone as well. My only beef is the handles. They are round and smooth. When they get wet they can be a ***** to hold on to. Would be better if they had contours for your fingers (like the Islanders). I've heard of guys having the handles changed to what are on the Islanders.

One thing for sure though, nothing sings like a Hardy!! [8D]

edit: 300 bucks for 2 of them is a deal I wouldn't turn down.

" nothing sings like a Hardy"

Callin all seals,, callin all seals !! dinner is served...

With all the different metals used on a Longstone just a drop of saltwater that didn't get washed off would cause electrolysis that would eat through the handle seats. I still have three Longstones from my mooching/strip casting days when they only cost me $29 to $32...

To smooth out the drags so big northern coho wouldn't break 8-pound test leader, we would bend the clicker springs back a bit...the clickers on my reels no longer scream, but quietly purrrrrr... and don't attract seals.

The best sound came from the drag on a little single-action Windex. Those reels only cost $15.00 at Army and Navy, just before the $7.99 knockoffs from the far east put the company out of business. I still have one Windex.

Funny how nostalgia and getting older makes you forget all the shortcomings of these two venerable reels. They're delicate, high maintenance, and with two-way drags should not be used for trolling, only mooching....and who's doing that any more?

$29-32.00
I was ripped off. I think I paid 60.00.
Same price as my mooching (Hardy) rods.

U can turn the clicker off
the comment about drag and the downrigger is part right, certainly to load the rod, you have to crank down a bit more than say what you would do mootching.
the reels are not perfect, they have JUST a wee bit of rash where they hit against my radar arch
they have been fished a bit..but not as much as the 4 islanders I also have.
7 S/A's..is more than I have room for with the Tuna rods in the arch (think that thru a bit)
I have the soft caes, boxes, and instructions/parts list
the money, all $300 goes to non-profits, half to a US wensite admin who runs a great free site, and half to CCA, which is TRYING to improve our resource. If a fishbc person buys them, I will do a 1/3 split, with the above mentioned non-profits..and 1/3 to tahsis salmon Enhancement
tight lines..

Very generous of you Tomic.
If I had 300.00, and Sitka didn't have first crack at them, and I didn't already have my quota of Hardy's, I'd be in there for them.
A very fair price.

..so right U are, well at least about Sitkaspruce having first crack...I am in NO hurry...I did not fish them at all last year....
love this site, love BC
tight lines all :))
