halibut opening day

anywhere from 150-300 is common for halibut - but guys catch them in much shallower and much deeper too.

what you are asking about is scope fishnfool - and yes with any sort of current you'll need scope. Depends on the depth you're fishing and the current.

quote:He said " No hali's in whirl Bay cause they eat sole."

So what would he suggest, fishing where there was no food for halibut to eat? I've seen lots of guys anchored in whirl bay.

Howdy,

Did a search on the SFBC search-engine and got to read some good advice on anchoring rigs. Wolf and others offered some good council on a 2004 thread.

So I left work early today and went down to Trotac all excited about learning more about the latest set-up for Halibut anchoring.

Hully-****! $560.00 smackers!

Ouch. Looks like I'll be bottom-bouncing on the drift for a bit while I scrape up some more coin to dump into this dreadful addiction...

Thats why you hire me LOL LOL or anyone of us or at least go out with someone who has done it ALOT we all have experience in anchoring and the what to do and not to do I have seen many people loose a system it is dangerous and if not knowing what to do can sink a boat. it is something that you really can explain on paper as there is alot of things to go over and seeing is better than reading.

As you have read currents play a MAJOR role trying to anchor on not great tides is a bad idea, thats where people get into trouble.

GOOD LUCK WOLF

Anchoring should not be taken lightly! you can know what you are doing and just have bad luck.I was out last year with two guys from the forum and we hung up on a cable or something if we did not know what we where doing it could have been bad news .

Can be spooky, we rescued a 185 double eagle from certain disaster at the Race last year, we had our gear up heading in and he tryed to stay, got ugly quick when he wrapped the prop up in his anchor line. Cut cut snip snip by us saved his boat, thank god it was an outboard.

I am going to hit it this weekend, can't wait for some fresh fish & chips.[:p]

I wrapped my anchor line on my prop once and didn't like it much. So now when I anchor I always raise my motor out of the water before dropping the hook. Works for me.

Thats just as bad no control if something happens keep it running and then you can move the boat if you can ESPECIALLY in windy conditions I have been anchoring for close to 20 years and have learnt alot in that time seen many boats sink and flipor get into trouble.
Do what you want but please be carefull out there would rally hate to see someone from this forum get hurt or die not knowing what to do.
And before you ask NO im not trying to DRUM up business Im almost fully booked for halibut just concerned for the fellow members on here As ill be honest ancoring is the thing I hate most about halibut fishing especially setting it because thats where the trouble lies.

My $0.02 if you are learning. Get your rig ready, thrown the hook where you want to be,and run around 10 knts perpendicular to the direction of the current, playing out line. Then, sit and wait for 5 mins for your anchor to hook up (You'll see the float get pulled by the current. Then, approach from downstream, and click on your zip line.

I went down to Trotac and found out a lot about how to anchor for Hali fishin. I've got almost all I'm going to need, still have to get a few things for the bouy. Had to buy an anchor lift and until yesturday I never knew what an anchor lift was...lol. The guys down at Trotac were kind enough to explain it to me and they even had a mini version of a halibut anchoring rig they laid out on the floor so you can get a real good idea about how it all works. So the plan is...... go out of Pedder Bay and find a spot somewhere between there and Albert Head in about 200 feet of water. Big ole herring on a spreader bar and hope I find a halibut. I checked the tides and on Sunday it looks like slack tide is around noon so I hope to fish from at least 11 am to 1 pm. I don't think anyone would be more surprised then me if I actually catch one but just going out and learning the ropes is ging to be fun. If anyone has any other ideas I'd love to hear about them..... Steve.

hey fishin fool , I am no expert on hali fishing but be sure to read the current table as opposed to the tide table to find slack water. I use a program called wxtide that I find is really good. A little work to set it up , but it works great. On Sunday true slack at Pedder should be around 11am. I have never caught a hali when the current has been moving faster than .5 a knot , but I'm sure it happens. Hope this helps. beemer

Thanks Beemer,
I'll be sure to be fishing around 11 am in that case as I don't want to miss the slack current. Probably an easier time to anchor then too. Don't want to anchor for the first time in anything too rough so it better be nice on Sunday...lol.

Jackel whats going on have you got your boat out west yet ? There's a bunch of us heading up for the easter weekend i'll leave a boat up from then on.

i used a 10lb ball as an anchor for a lot of years and it worked great just chuck it over tied with some heavy cod line or gangion line it will snag and keep you there in the rockswhere you want to be on the edge of the rocknear the gravel. worked great for me.with a 17 eagle and 16foot dou ble eagle too. probably not too goodfor over 17 footerbut the ball will pull loose before your boat sinks. safer way to anchor for beginnersobviously wont work in sand orsmall gravelbut so what.whirl bay is a great place to practise anchoring ithas a good bottom and not a lot of tide.lots of room to practise pulling up anchor

WhirlBay is also whre my grandfather taught my dad and i to anchor and it was great! I recomend there for a beginer! Whatever you do dont go to racerocks :P We had an incident there, as it sounds we were not the only ones to ever have one of those there :P
