I am concerned about the future of the recreational halibut fishery in BC because..
This affects me because...state all of your reasons, here’s some ideas:
• Are you employed in the sport fishing sector or is a family member?
• Would severe decreases in halibut fishing affect your income and quality of life?
• Would severe decreases in bag limits or season length affect your community? How?
• Is the opportunity to fish for halibut important to you, your friends and your family – why?
Further, I am offended by the idea of the privatization of our common property resources because...
• Do you feel that the privatization of a common property resource to a small special interest group like the commercial quota holders is unfair and potentially illegal?
• How does the idea of “slipper skippers” asking you to pay for access to a resource that you actually own, and they got for free make you feel?
Summary of the problem
• the recreational fishery is likely to be severely restricted in 2011 with large negative impacts on fishermen and businesses in your community.
• This is being done in order to meet the needs of a 435 “slipper skippers” who never paid for their quotas in the first place, and now want us to pay for it.
• This is about allocation, not conservation – everyone wants a sustainable fishery, we just want our ability to participate in it.
Summary of the solution
• The recreational fishery needs a minimum of 2 halibut per day and 2 in possession in order to continue to provide its huge economic and social benefits to British Columbians like yourself.
• DFO Minister Gayle Shae has the power to do this. She can solve the problem.
