halibut in sayward

Its hard to give you directions for the other spots as I don,t have a chart of the area anymore, just know where to go from memory. Just keep a lookout for other boats and you will have no problem finding other spots. Not my favourite area for Halis due to nasty water that kicks up in the straight as previously mentioned. Good Luck....j.j

Thank you to all who have responded to this thread. On my third attempt, the Sayward halibut gods finally shone on my boat. we decided to try Wellborne Channel, i researched the RCA's and found a nice trough to float through on the ebb. I also tried a new rig. i threaded a large glow hootchie on the top single hook and a chunk sockeye belly on the bottom hook. We were lucky enough to hook into this beauty. Weighted out at 39LBS. What a great day, this was my friends biggest halibut and biggest fish ever, good memories.

yes is it was a fabulous day, weather, bounty, all turned out great. The RCA's in the area was one of the reasons i went to this new hookup. its pretty big, and so far i have only hooked 1 rockfish in 3 days with it. although that one rockfish did make for an amazing eagle encounter 10 days ago. ill post that video here.[rMBJltqg2mM] http://youtu.be/rMBJltqg2mM

One of the coolest things to show visitors to the coast is feeding the eagles. Lots of times up at Stuart you can just whistle and hold up the dinner offering and the eagles will come a running for a free meal.

30-50 pounders are the perfect size. Had one barn door. While it was still good, it wasn't the same as a chicken.

No i fished earls and helmken for about 5 hrs on the day i took the video. and no luck, one ling and the rock cod that became eagle lunch.
Its ironic, the day i fished earls, was focused primarily on halibut and nothing. on wednesday we were focusing on crab and prawns and almost didn't bring the hali gear. dropped a line for less than an hour and got lucky??

Hello! A lot of good information in this thread - wanted to see if anyone has been halibut fishing out of Kelsey Bay in the last few years with any luck? I go out of Campbell River and haven't been one of the lucky ones to catch a halibut out at the lighthouse or the hump while salmon trolling. But it does seem like quite a few have been caught the last few years, maybe there are some more showing up on the east coast VI nowadays?? I have gone up to Kelsey Bay area a few times and also tried, but no luck. Just curious if anyone has seen more / less halibut showing up around Helmcken or Wellbore Channel in recent years?
