Halibut Fishing in Nootka Sound

Yes, look on your charts and look for structure. I have had success in some of the holes that show on the chart.
Also got a 50# last summer near the light house at unfriendly cove.

Well, I can tell you where they are NOT.....................my freezer!

Head further north, Alaska !!!!....GLG how far off shore were you?

Sorry I mis-spoke ... I was with in sight of the light house when I didn't catch a halibut.
Will try further offshore next year. Thanks all for your tips.:p

LOL....The halibut seminar is in Victoria ! all the halibut must surly be migrated down that way! June july and august, the halibut around Nootka are in the rivers spawning, not winter harbour or Port hardy, however.

The only way to catch them during July and Aug in Nootka is on a fly. Theyre surface feeding that that time of year and can often be seen jumping. Just pick a random spot maybe around camel rock or something..

I don't understand why you would purposely mislead a fellow angler. Everyone who fishes Nootka knows that by that time of year they are all around the mouth of the Conuma or hanging around the wall in Moutcha Bay.

Yes they are there.
Personally I have taken them about 8 to 11 miles off shore,North of Pay through the Local Dock keeper Friendly Cove but west of the Bajo reef or what ever its called. Anchor, Throw down a scent tube if your so inclined to not have to wait as long, bing bang boom. We also caught a few Skate. If you want more of a mix of bottom fish ..... go to the reef more.

I picked up a couple last summer right at the dock at Critter Cove.
Mind you, I had to make a fast getaway cus some big guy with a grey beard was yelling at me.

To answer the original question about Friendly and Burdwood - the answer is yes....unintentional catch as we we using salmon gear (white hootchie) near the bottom (150` as I recall) about midway between Burdwood and Friendly...my bro also got one - both were chickens but great eating. Outside is more consistent however.
