gold river report

We just got back from the north end of nootka (esperanza) Fog ,fog and more fog and a little lumpy for my boat. Some Gradys going off but us smaller boats staying in and very little to report. We where for the very first time Skunked.Of the dozen odd boats we did not see anyone else catch anything .I have fished a few years on the coast and I can say I have never seen it this foggy. If I did not have GPS with maps I would never have gone out into that soup.At one point 10 feet from rosa island and we could not see it.We did try port today for socks and got 5.they are the smallest socks I have ever seen.

Your right about that 'frango'. I've never seen so many 3-5 lb socks!
Is our net fishery developing a new breed of smaller sockeye by gill netting all the larger ones? Someone with commercial fishing experience could answer this.

Thats a good question. It might just be early?it might be lack of food out in the open ocean? or they are just size challenged?????I will be hitting them again thurs morning.I will let you know if they got bigger.PS My wife lost one that had to be 8lbs so they are there.

We had the same thoughts as well 'frango'. I have noticed that of the ones we caught, all of the smaller fish were male and the one larger one we got was a female. Does anyone know if a greater percentage of the earlier fish are male and the females follow later; and are male sockeye typically smaller than the females?
There are so many 3-4 lb fish that its like they're jack sockeye, although I don't think there is such a thing.

The smaller size of socks could also be indicative of the poorer feed quality in the warmer ocean environment

We managed 5 fish today.Tuff fishing, started at 5 pulled them at 10.Thats not good .We had the same thing as you drhook one biggish one was a female. We saw a hand full of boats doing well but most I would say went home empty .

A neighbour of mine got back yesterday. Landed 3, lost 9 for 1 mornings fishery! Yikes, thats a high loss ratio but seems to be the norm. Experimenting with single small trebles and tandom single rigs. Juries still out. Will know more in several years of testing.

ok so how did a gold river report turn into a port soc report hhhhhhhhhmmmmmmmmmmmmm anyone???

Sorry my fault.I was thinking this very same thing driving home from port this am.Sometimes things go in a different direction. So short answer, oops?
