Gill net opening

24 hr gill net opening announced for the mouth of the Fraser starting Monday 8:00am till Tuesday 8:00 am. So, would it be a waste of time to try and fish the mouth of the Fraser trolling for Sockeye during this opening?

Not just a waste of time but potentially dangerous as well, unless you're talking about fishing outside the open area. If you've never seen a Fraser Sockeye gill net opening it's a site to see - hard to imagine more boats and nets in the water. There's a reason the fishing goes dead in the river for a solid two days after one of these 24hr gill net openings. Probably the most intensive fishing in BC.

Okay, thanx for that man. Now after they finish, when would it be okay to fish the mouth again. 1 day or 2 days later? Ive had some boat issues and haven't been able to make it out there yet. Was gearing up for Monday, Tuesday, now that's gone for a shyte.

Unlike the river fishery, upstream of this opening, (which will be dead for a couple of days after the opening) new schools could be showing up at the Fraser mouth within hours of nets being hauled out of the water. Based on the Area 12 and 13 test seines, there are some VERY big schools of fish on their way, as the daily numbers are impressive. Give it a day and there should be plenty stacked up again. Getting them to bite, well, that's a different story …

Okay thanx man. Ive heard its feast or famine out there. Sure wanting to have a go at it!!!! Lol

Dennis,
seems like every tide brings a new wave,
just get out there and have a blast

like hookin'op said, get out there, it's easy enough to fish around the gill netters, or just avoid them, the sporties that have no clue are much more dangerous imho. fished may times amongst the gill netters and the trollers( just keep an eye out for which way the gill nets are running) . if there is an opening for them that means lots of fish there. I suspect they are anticipating the big run coming down the inside in the next few days. good look out there

Many. many yrs ago, when I moored a boat in Point Roberts and ran out to Tsawwassen for coho, had to dodge gill nets on the American side to get to the coal port. One time I ran over one and kept going. Lol

that's not funny when someones trying to make a living and you tear up their net not only does it cost money and time fixing a net but it ***** up their whole day.

Before you get your panties all bunched up in a knot. It was an accident bro. I was on full throttle and couldn't avoid it...

It's probably best you stay in the "wack" Dennis. Seems you have no respect for people out there trying to make an honest living. Why were you navigating at full throttle in the first place during that opening in that strech of water ? It's irresponsible guys like you who give sporties a bad name.

Maybe if the operators of those net boats learned some consideration and not run their nets right in front of boats underway there would be less of these incidents

Totally agree. I have worked with the GN fleet in the past and they have a tough enough job without having to deal with jerks who dont understand that they should be headin TOWARDS the gillnetter until they can determine which direction the net has been set. Most times the fisherman will hand signal which direction he has set his net.... Oh -- and see that bright red buoy?? Absolutely NO excuse for running over a persons net.. and then running away without even a "Sorry" is pathetic.

Before you all get in a tizzy here. This happened 30 + yrs ago. I was a 20 yr old kid, just starting out ,running a boat on the ocean...Im old now and hopefully a lot smarter.
