Gerald/Ballenas Winter springs,prawn crab

Tains i also watched you set gear in front of the house while laying on the couch in the morn. Not much in the way of crabs, maybe the odd red rock where you set your traps but its a mud bottom. You need to run north to Rathtrevor beach or south to Nanaimo for dungies.

Coppermoon thats an odd find at least you got some traps.

BRS no worries i ended up helping Jon take his rig off blocks and put on a trailer. Next time!

First time in area. Tried a few spots for prawns even near other traps but notta

They aren't yours unfortunately . I've called and left a message. Maybe the owner is a snowbird and will get them back this spring. I found 2 "lost" sets that day. Both sets were not weighted. Prawning seems to be hit or miss for me so far. Tried a lot of different spots that have done well in the past with mixed results.

Damn, thought I might have got lucky. I still have to take a look around for mine, I have a white float and I was trying to find them and there was whitecaps and a million seagulls sittin on the water. BRS

Hey Moon there's a guy who has his boat behind mine at Beachcomber whos kids went out and dropped a bunch of traps and lost them. I found two sets for him and he left me a case of beer at the marina office. The number would be from Victoria and I cant remember his last name but I could find out, he's a nice guy. BRS

There's nothing down my way. I've been all over and haven't noticed a white float. A number of years ago I had a set of my traps picked up by the Powell River CG - 5 months later

Its a Nanoose number. I expect to get a reply from the owner at some point. The other set belonged to a friend of mine.

I was out on Saturday and hooked this guy. 6:30pm, green flasher, green needlefish, 60' deep. He started with an amazing run, paused, then did another run that was so strong, I thought a seal had taken him. Only when he tired a bit and gave a few headshakes did I know he was seal-free. My friend missed with the net, but he was hooked well enough that the second netting job was a success. I never bring a scale with me, so don't know the weight - maybe 15lbs or so.

Nice one. Maybe if the wind gives us a break it might be possible to get 1 last fish on the 2011 license. Are you at liberty to say where this was?

Just so you know the owner of those traps I found got back to me a while ago. They had been lost a month or so from around the Mistaken island area

Great fish. It's interesting how shallow you hit him. Looks to be the nw side of Gerald. That reef often holds fish but is tough to troll. Might be wrong though.

We dragged the bottoms to 215' deep, and up as high as 30' over the reefs later int the day. Stacked rods all afternoon. When he hit I think we were in maybe 70-80' of water.

After that encouraging picture, I went out yesterday and picked up a 12 lber before the winds picked up. Packed full of 4" something. 160 on the downrigger

Pretty good success at Gerald yesterday. They are a bit on the small size (largest 13 ) and both were hatchery (American?) fish. 170 on B&W and G&W spoons

Looks like Spring has sprung, awesome. Took the boat out last week for maintenance but she'll be back in on the weekend. This is coming up to the best fishing of the year for our area, keep your fingers crossed but looks promising so far. Kelly I think it's time for a new thread, come up with something for our area this year. Hey Moon have you been prawning?..........BRS

Not too exciting today. Released a little guy and only know of 1 other keeper. Maybe they are headed down to our friends in Nanaimo. Prawning is not too exciting around our way either 70 -100 in 4 traps. Nice size though.

Hey Kelly are you around this weekend? BRS
