I pick up a new roll of #72 gangen/gangion at Nikka every few years. So far I have used it for: halibut leaders (its original intent), a loop for lifting cannon balls from the water or carrying them to the boat (easier on the hands), lashing down my kicker when on the trailer, making a grip on my gaff, boat tarp twine, anchor line for little trout fishing anchors, tying tarps to trees in the campground, staking trees, retying netting to floor hockey nets, replacing javelin grips, and hanging bird feeders, flower baskets and staking tomatoes. Awesome stuff.
Burn the ends, get someone to show you the knot to make a 4 inch loop to choke through the eye of a big circle hook (or use a bowline and half-hitch). Use the lovers' knot or the double fisherman to bend 2 pieces together or to make a loop for your cannon ball with one piece. see animation http://www.animatedknots.com/double...ge=LogoGrog.jpg&Website=www.animatedknots.com
Pacific Net and Twine - commercial fishing stores always have the best selection of gear. They also carry the aluminum crimps that you can use to crimp a loop in the line for making up your own down rigger clips that won't tangle like the mono ones you buy from the store.
