Gag Order Legislation to Protect Fish Farms

Here is the response from Randy Hawes:

The false reporting of a disease, BSE for instance, could result in closure of a border and ruin of a farmer or rancher. The Act does not suppress information about any confirmed disease, but it replaces an Act written in 1948 when the transmission of information was much different. Inaccurate reporting of information about a disease can cause panic. The Act specifies the same reporting sequence as has always been in place. No information about a real confirmed disease will ever be withheld from the public.

That could be true but not reassuring given the "authorized" Canadian lab has failed to detect most viruses while others throughout the world have done so. Then the Federal minister said that if people don't get sick he is not interested. Then PM Harper turned around and eliminated environmental safeguards.

I passed along your comment The55. Mr. Hawes must have been sitting on his computer as his response was very quick. Hear is what he had to say:

"This Act was not developed by the federal government and it was many months in drafting with considerable input from the professional community. I believe that ALL MLAs from all parties care as much about the environment and public health as you and to infer otherwise would be a huge insult. I am sure the same can be said for the federal government and Mr. Harper. Incidentally, I do not buy into the tripe put out by some groups that say environmental safeguards have been eliminated. Streamlining does not mean less oversight but duplication and unnecessary regulation hurts the economy. Perhaps you might think about those hurt by a weak economy. Do you really think the environment is top of their list? A strong economy actually puts the focus on the environment and not the converse."

Good God! PM Harper has never shown evidence of consultation with the public. The closest he gets is to read talking points and his daily talk with god in his sleep.

If I have a vehicle, regardless of what shape it is in and I take away 25, 50, or 75 % of parts and ask you to put the vehicle back together there is no guarantee the vehicle you are able to put back together will even function, let alone be more streamlined. Trudeau consulted. Harper dictates. Is anyone in Canada aware of any consultation of users? Anyone? Anywhere?

Just received this email:

Thank you for your email regarding the Animal Health Bill 37. We have received many emails regarding this topic and please know that we are informing Bob of the overwhelming public concern with Bill 37. It is important that you express your opinions as a voting citizen and work to have those opinions heard. We suggest that you write your concerns in a letter addressed to the Minister of Agriculture and Lands-Hon. Don McRea, the Agriculture and Lands Critic-Lana Popham, and your local MLA. We would also like to point you towards Lana Popham’s thoughts on this matter that includes an amendment that has been called as a result of voters such as yourself writing letters opposed to Bill 37. http://www.bcagcritic.blogspot.ca/2012/05/animal-health-act-should-not-become-law.html. There has also been a petition set up online at http://www.change.org/SalmonFlu by Alex Morton a lead researcher of salmon farm viruses.
