Fuel Consumption

I have a 16 foot Double Eagle with a 75 hp Merc 2 stroke (2002). My fuel consumption is excessive. I am burning about 20 litres running from Pedder Bay to Albert Head and back.

I am wondering whether I have the wrong prop or if the motor is tuned to run too rich. It runs smoothly at about 3800 rpm and tops out at 5200 rpm. It also takes too much time to get up on plane but I think that is because it is heavy on the back end.

Any suggestions to improve fuel consumption? Please don't suggest a new motor because that is a rather obvious but expensive fix.

Howdy,

Check the owners manual to verify max recommended RPM at WOT.
If you are over that by 200 or more RPM, I'd increase the pitch.
If memory serves you should be cruising at about 60 to 70% of max RPM.

Also, check the thrust angle of the engine.
If it is too high - like when the engine is trimmed upwards - that will certainly hold you nose-up longer while comming out of the hole.

That 75/Merc should be plenty for your boat.

Good Luck.

That 75 merc should pop a 16' d.eagle out of the hole in seconds
and you should get 5500 to 6000 rpms at wot.
sounds like it's propped wrong.

2 strokes are hard on gas period.
i could not believe the difference when i switched my
50hp evinrude for a 50 hp honda.
i can run/troll all day on less than 20 ltr's of fuel.

I run a 70 hp Johnson (2 stroke) and it runs for 2 hours full throttle on 25 L. I think your carb settings are way off. Bring it in a shop and get your carbs checked and adjusted...

clean the bottom of your boat the growth has been heavy at pedder lately. also clean the leg of motor

My buddy has a 16 Double Eagle and his 70hp Evinrude pops that boat right out of the hole in seconds. His fuel econonmy is about 2 hours on 25 liters.

Off topic - does anyone know how much a Yamaha 150hp 4 stroke uses per hour while cruising at about 4200 rpm?

Do you have a keel flotation chamber in that boat ? , my cousin had one which had a hairline crack in the bottom and only opened/flexed while running , it obviously filled up slowly over a period of time and he was hauling around a lot of weight in water; consequently his first notice was how hard it was to get up and planing.

Talk about gas pigs I had a 200 black max on a 19 alumi, I since switched to a 150 black max and my fuel is cut in half

Now you can cut it another 20%-30% more by going to a 150HP 4-stroke. :D;)
