Fishing in Cancun

Has anyone tried deep sea fishing in the Cancun area in late June or early July? We are headed there this summer and would like to get an idea about charter companies and availability of fish. The various websites all suggest that early summer is a great time to fish Cancun but I would like some real experienced feedback rather than rely on advertising.

I went down to cancun on a stag from mar 10 to 17, and we went out on a boat called "stuff it" through cancunfishingcharters.com. The guides were good and very knowledgeable, not the greatest english but got us into four sailfish and we landed three. One was 84" one 78" and one 74".We only ended up fishing for about 2 hours after about a hour and a half run from the dock as four of the six guys i was with were puking there brains out! As for the company, they were ok and would go back on a charter again.. Just make sure you only buy what booze you want off them as they took two cases of corona back as we did not drink it cause of the pukers and the two of us that weren't sick were drinking a bottle of jack daniels that i snuck on.. They did not refund the guys for the beer and needless to say they were a bit mad cause it was way overpriced when they bought it in the first place..lol
Do not know of what it is like when you are going down but thought you might like some feedback about a company..

By late June/early July the Sailfish run will be long over and Cancun's not really deep enough/close to any major current to attract major pelagic species like Marlin and Tuna.

There's a lot of Barracuda in the area but if you've caught one Barracuda you've caught them all, they come up like a log with their mouth open/huge fangs showing no fight to speak of.[V]

The only excitement when I went out of nearby Isla Mujeres was seeing a 6' Cuda tear apart a 2 footer I hooked.

What I suggest is to walk the docks and talk to people who have chartered that day find how the deal was before booking anything, trust the people who paid not those who want you to pay.

Summer is supposed to be good fishing for small Tarpon in the national marine park north of town, casting close to the mangroves, much more of a sure thing than a long expensive boat ride to nowhere.

Thanks DB. My plan had been focused on sailfish. Every website I checked indicated that sailfish were still around in numbers at the end of June even though the run peaks in the later part of winter. Good to know the truth. I agree that barracuda are a waste of time. My buddies won't be interested in onshore tarpon fishing unless it is really productive which seems unlikely.
