fishing for group

It has fallen on me to organize a family reunion for the summer of 2013. Most of the family is from Minnesota and several are avid anglers. My first thought is to bring them to BC for some real fishing.

I have a group of up to 20 people that come with a few requirements in addition to my own requirements:

Needs good fishing needless to say
Need moorage or docking for a 27 footer.
Needs pub (and liquor store) within walking distance, the next generation is about ten 20 somethings, mostly female, all drinkers.
Needs cabins for some, some will camp.

Any ideas? I've looked at Browns Bay, Heriot Bay on Quadra Island, Telegraph Cove, Duval Point, ???

careful with the "mostly female 20 somethings", lol...good luck...holmes*

From the pics I've seen on here, especially with NOG!

Do you want to do all the fishing yourself - you said you bring a 27' boat - or do you need fishing charters? If you are new to westcoast fishing you should definitely invest in at least one charter trip to give you an idea how it goes.

As for location, as holmes said, any of the major westcoast harbour towns will provide most of what you listed - especially good fishing. Bamfield, Renfrew, Ukie, Tofino, Nootka, Hardy - but you are at the mercy of the sea - meaning weather plays a factor and for some of the inlanders that could be a rough ocean...

I just returned from a family reunion in Minnesota where our mostly female 20 somethings were turning a few heads. Fun to watch. My generation woke up one morning with a strange 20 something boy on our couch. None of the girls would fess up. Great fun.

One last requirement. I don't have a trailer for my 27 foot boat so have to motor to our location. West Coast is doable but risky for a weather blow out.

get it pro towed and drop it at clutesi,, its cheap for what you get out of it, see ya in bamfield!!!!

We've fished most of the west coast locations with our 18 ft. double eagle. Did really well. I expect I would guide some of them and others might hire a guide. I'm sure there would be some bragging rights debated. I do well but probably can't compete with a local guide.

Towing it is probably not a bad idea, that opens up all the west coast stuff. Could motor to Parksville and tow to Alberni. I used to love fishing out of China Creek. Run out past Bamfield for hali's and Sockeye in the inlet.

I know one of my flatlander relatives (my younger brother) does not do well in swells. Don't know about the others. Fun figuring it out.

Sounds like you should check into Sooke. All the amenities and protected waters and 2013 will be a pink year again with non-stop action. Minnesotans will be more than happy just catching 7# pinks all day and a few springs mixed in here and there.

You might want to slowly explain them the cabin/cottage rental costs out here west. I spent a lot of time in the back country of Minnesota and you can get wonderfully equipped cabins right on lakes or rivers for under $50 a night with canoe use inclusive and sometimes an invite to dinner from the owners. A lot different business style than here on the westcoast.

Not to mention the difference in booze prices. Did I mention my ten drinking 20 somethings? It is expensive out here compared to there.

Sooke is a great idea, I would love to fish Swiftsure. Looks expensive though. Since I live here, I pay lodging for the whole gang, flatlanders just have to pay for travel. I guess I have to figure out how much I want to pay to see my relatives hurl over the side. I have two nephews that I would really like to give a fishing experience, the rest can just enjoy the view, and the pub.

I would like to suggest port alberni IF DFO does not wipe out the sockeye again for the recreational fleet like they did this year.

Protected waters... very warm place on the island.
The sockeye fishery can be the most fun with double and triple headers.
You can run the canal and go down to bamfield, broken group for a few days with a boat that size, or go offshore if you have no Pukers!

I love arrowvale campground. On the river for swimming, Cottages to rent, freezer to use, and 5 minutes to the boat launch.

Holmes, do you know my family?! Pretty much as you say, sleep where you drop.

This is fun, trying to design a reunion for a bunch of flatlanders (I'm an ex-flatlander). Almost anywhere out here would knock their socks off!

Arrowvale looks interesting, love the inlet and the sockeye gong show. Are there actually grassy tent areas or do you just tent in between RV's?

They have a big group site or large tenting sites.. You wont be squished in there like many RV/camping places.

Where are you heading out from with your 27'? If you are coming out of Vancouver or Victoria then Sooke is your best bet. We just did a 3 day camping trip out at Pedder Bay and had a great time.

They have 10 camp sites that are off to the side of a large RV ground. Maybe you could reserve all 10 spots then you'd have the whole section to yourselves? The marina there has moorage, fuel, ice, tackle, food, showers, washrooms, and more. It's about a 3 hour run from vancouver at 20mph or 1 hour from Victoria. As was mentioned, 2013 will be another big pink run and perfect for non-stop action on the rods and some decent (compared to fresh water) fish.

Port Renfrew or Sooke both look good. I'll check the thread, but how far do you have to go for Tuna and what time of year out of Renfrew or Sooke? Would love to go for Tuna.

As others have said, there are a number of places, one more is: http://www.moutchabay.com/

20 campsites, some with water & power and others bare
3 yurts
2 chalets
lodge
restaurant & bar (no off sales)
fuel & propane
fish processing plant
boats for rent + charters
wireless internet

Just my 2cents worth

Dennis

Room rate includes beer and wine, that almost makes it cheap! They don't know my family, would take a beating.

Money is a bit of an object. Lots of stuff out there. Leaning toward Nootka Sound, never been there.

WCVI! :)

Just about anywhere, except might have a problem with that "pub within walking distance". Contact Bob at Gallaugher's Sports Fishing Camp, which will probably be one of your less expensive choices? He has cabins, RV parking, dock, and quite sure if you book 20 people he can make arrangements from some tents? He won't like that 27' boat on his dock, but again with that many people, probably won't be an issue. Also gives you protected waters to fish, along with Swiftsure and that tuna run you are thinking about doing. Which will be the end of August-middle of September for that.

Now for that pub within walking distance if that is a deal breaker that actually does start limiting your choices. Along with just a couple already mentioned I believe the best fit for that "pub within walking distance" (that I know of) and still handle 20 people both cabins, lodge, tents would probably be Island West, in Ucluelet?

Both of the above have internet access - check on that to see if open to the public?

Do you have radar? Best time to run up anywhere above Cape Beale is actually early in the morning when the seas are calmer and believe it or not - in the fog! You really don't start picking up ocean swells (to speak of), until you get out of the Strait of Juan de Fuca (e.g. going to either Swithsure or Ucluelet)

The run to Port Renfrew is actually fairly easy and not that bad all. It is usually a nice run! Very few weather days in July, August, and September. Yes, it can get rough, especially on both ends of the Strait and especially with some good tide flows and strong winds. I have found during those months once you get around Race Rocks it usually flatens right out.
