Fish Smell in Your Fridge

Hey guys the wife is ready to murder me. Left a bag of lings bits in the fridge the other night and I guess some juices got out and now it stinks like all hell. I'm worried because my shed fridge ended up going in the bin after I left some herring defrosting in there for a week. Anyone got any tricks to get the smell out? It's already been cleaned with bleach, ammonia, baking soda and dish soap.

I see a new fridge in your wife’s future and a new shed fridge for you

Are there any cracks or seams where the fish juice could have dripped into that you didn’t access with the amonia and bleach?
Maybe just under the the glass edge molding.

I just bought a new shed fridge and this one isn't so easy to replace!!!

Once the rotten meat smell/juice/blood gets into the insulation behind the panels I found it impossible to get rid of the smell short of junking the fridge. I even tried renting a commercial ozone gas machine from a cleaning supply company which breaks down organics. You plug it in, put it in the fridge and leave as you do not want to be breathing that stuff and I ran it for a couple of days. I understand they use those machines to get rid of the stink from undiscoverd bodies that have been rotting for a few weeks in a hot house. It did not get rid of the fridge stink but did knock it back some. My case may have been much worse than yours as it was a fridge that was left unplugged and the meat in the freezer rotted while I was away. Perhaps your case is less extreme and the ozone machine rental may work but if it does not work completely you are going to either need a new fridge or a new wife. I would empty it and clean everything with bleach again first.

Maybe both...

Update! So I cleared the entire fridge out last night and washed every drawer and shelf in the sink and then wiped it all down with a cloth dripping with vinegar. Wiped every food item as well. I did find a little puddle under the liner in the vegetable drawer .
This morning it was 98% better! I think I got it.

Next time you catch a ling I better take it off your hands so you don’t make that mistake again

The old trick of an open baking soda carton at the back of the fridge still works.

By bits you mean fillet leftovers? Vac seal or triple bag that stuff and straight into the freezer!

I hope you are right, BUT give it some time and I think it will come back.
