Finned or round canon balls

I have always used finned canon balls. After chatting to another forum member here who likes round unfinned cankn balls better than the ones with the fin, I am starting to wonder what the difference and benefits are to either type. Its obvious the finned balls have the fins to help keep the ball from rotating and creating line twist on the downrigger line, but curious as to why or when is it better to use round balls. Obviously there's a use for them since I see the tackle shops stocked with both types

There's supposed to be less blowback but the twisting of the dr line is a pain in the butt
